So I was testing to see if the car still ran after I installed a new Pressure Sensor Switch on my second fuel pump and decided to test my new audio recorder. Here's the output:
Some people may not be able to easily play a wav file, so I uploaded it to Youtube. Of course, they only handle video, so added a few photos and made it into a short video.
Nice! What make/model audio recorder? Using the internal mics, or external? How far back from the exhaust?
It's a TASCAM DR-05 Solid State Recorder, using the internal mics. I placed the recorder about 6 feet back and on a tripod about 4 feet up so it didn't get the direct blast from the exhaust.
I have a ZOOM H4, and have done some experimentation with positioning, up and back about 10 feet sounds the best. The biggest problem is extraneous noise, even with a big foam windscreen on it. Gotta do my throttle blip recordings at 3 AM when it's quiet.
Gets good at about the 2:25 mark, coming out of the Oak Tree at VIR.
Mic is an Audio Technica PRO24CM connected to my GoPro Hero2 via a massive gauge wire that acts as a tether as well. Mic is zip tied to the body right by the exhaust outlet. Wind noise is reduced by the location and the windscreen on the mic itself.
That sounds way different than my 81. Yours sounds like a race car and mine quite literally sounds like a boat. Your 928 sounds amazing.
On my 81 I had a Borla cat back exhaust. My wife said she could hear me a coming home 5 blocks away. She said it sounded like a tank rumbling down the road...

Looks like a great run. Sounds good to. If I had to run a multi-sport event in my car (rally, autocross, road course, drag race/standing mile, etc), you'd be on my short list of drivers to enlist.

Yours sounds awesome George!
Sounds good, too bad it's so short a clip.... The road noise is more obvious in your recording, but the wind noise seems under control. I was looking for a way to record my ORR run, but was afraid to mount the recorder outside the car, since the air motion is a lot stronger. I was thinking that inside the bumper might work, but from your video, the road noise might over power the exhaust sound.

Yeah, at 200 mph the wind noise would be, uh, more! Maybe try under the hood? How loud is the exhaust inside the cabin? Or perhaps since your speed is more constant, a filter could be applied after the fact?
I got to ride in Richards car one night as he took me on a 'test drive' so I could ride in my first 928. Lets just say he knows the limits of his car very well! hahaha. Was a great ride, and taking a corner marked 20mph at 70+ was .... well... WEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
