Warning
Doc gave the okay, and got the fluids changed so...
After 11 months RKD in OKC is back driving the GTS!!! Drivers, and pedestrians beware.
Words cannot describe the wonderful feeling AND sound of driving around in the GTS today! Being able to walk again pales in comparison.

Last July 23rd i stepped on a discarded roofing nail in my back yard and despite putting antibiotic on it, the wound turned gangrene. Spent 2 weeks in the hospital on IV antibiotics trying to stop the infection. Doctors were expecting me to die from the infection. When finally stopped I had lost one toe and 1/3 of the flesh on my foot. For the next month they were expecting me to lose my foot. For the next month after that they were expecting me to lose my little toe. They had already remove the toe next to my little toe because the infection had gotten into the bone. They used some new stuff called ACELL that stimulates and regrows whatever cells it come into contact with. instead of my foot just scarring over it grew new flesh except for the lost toe. it was doing really well and it looked like i was going to be able to walk by Christmas when there were some secondary complications due to the long term powerful antibiotic use. It took 3 months to get the secondary infections under control and a fourth surgery to remove the knuckle from my little toe. 11 months after stepping on the nail all that is left is a wound on the top of my foot about the size of a quarter that is quickly closing. Only this week have the doctors given me the okay to start bearing weight on my foot again.
Don't know if better for it is quite the words I would use. After being basically bed ridden for over 10 months, only allowed to get vertical long enough to go to the restroom. I have definitely learned whom I can count on and whom my real friends are.

When finally stopped I had lost one toe and 1/3 of the flesh on my foot. With some new t-cell type stuff called ACELL and after weathering some other complication caused by the antibiotics that stopped the gangrenous infection all of the flesh grew back except for the one toe and I am just now able to bear weight on my foot again. Several doctors have told me they would have just cut my foot off instead of trying to save it.
You were unlucky, but in the end fortunate.
I do EM/Trauma. There are docs like these out there that I try to avert my patients from when they have to move up the line.
You were unlucky initially, but in the end you were REALLY fortunate.
Again I am glad for you.

Was lucky the surgeon wanted to try to save my foot and got me on the ACELL program, but a little unlucky that he did not relinquish control to wound care when the secondary problems started and the wounds stopped healing.

Wow Richard sorry to hear about the ordeal, I remember someone mentioning last November you were ill, but damn. Sounds like everything is going to be OK now, but I can't imagine what you and your family went through. Hope you can make it down to Third Coast this year, I'll buy you one.

Wow, long road, congrats on the positive outcome! Always great to find some gifted health professionals that get involved and will persist/innovate, instead of following some rote stepwise script that one has to suspect was largely informed by insurance guidelines..
My father confronted a similar challenge, bacterial in nature. They treated it like a burn and I still shudder at the pain he went through when I took him for the debreeding appointments. Unfortunately, at the time it wasn't his most severe health challenge either.
