Default Odd gas tank leak....

So i noticed i had a nice gas smell after fill up. no drips of fuel on the floor. SO today when i filled up i opened the trunk and looked at the sender area to check. Nothing un till just after the pump clicked. fuel was weeping down the side of the tank ( between the return line and sender wires in the picture)

got home, check again. just a little pool of gas around the sender. nothing on the side of the tank, nothing under the tank... i used my little usb cam to check around the fill neck part of the tank and its dry.

not if the vent line on the main body of the tank was cracked, i would expect it to leak all the fuel out to that point. it does not. i can let it sit for a week and no more gas will show up....

if it had a leak on top of the main body, it should leak fuel up to that point... it does not.......

UGH
thoughts?

Had something similar happen when the large plastic nut holding the sender in place decided to crack. Solved with a new nut . Might be worth a look.

Put the nut in boiling water for a few minutes before putting it back on.

sounds like the return entry point - hose looks good - not cracked underneath? Get a mirror in there so you can see under the hose where it fits in the gauge head, wire a remote switch to jumper the pump relay and be able to turn it on/off from the hatch area, wipe it all very dry, get a good strong light in place onto the mirror, pop the switch, look for the first drip....

Mine leaked from the sender and hence would only leak when the tank was full. Can you check for a leaking hose by feeling the short piece of hose (photo 1)?
Have you checked the plastic tube that connect to the breather with your cam (photo 2)?

When I replaced my tank the short return hose was not good at the tank end, and it pulled off the steel line with very little effort - the crimp was a waste of material. I replaced it with a new hose and screw clips at both ends.

I think my tank has a leak at the breather hose. with my hand up there in the fender the hose feels dry/brittle. tank seems to leak from here when filling up.

Can I drop tank about 6" to inspect this without disconnecting everything? I have a nice motorcycle lift I can rest it on.

Sender was good and dry. It leake down from above but stopped when I got home. Fuel level is above the main tank with no leaks.... Ah well. Drive her to empty an deck. Just never heard of a self sealing after full leak

To drop tank a little you will need to disconnect the return hose, the gauge wiring, and watch the breather hose that goes through the chassis rail on the right. If its this thats leaking you should be able to see where with enough light in there - find where it connects to the tank inside the chassis line.
Make sure its close to empty, have an extinguisher handy. Clamp the hose from tank to pump, disconnect, and disconnect the outlet hose from the filter...
Support the tank, undo the 4 bolts holding the cradle.
