Default Intermittent tach needle fail

Happened today while cruising on the freeway, hit some bumps and the tach needle dropped for a second, then was fine. No loss of engine power. What connections should I check? I don't know where the tach gets it's feed.

Many possibilities, but most likely problem areas are the connector to the printed circuit board, and from the board to the tach.

Best approaches:
1) Try to not notice it; or
2) Do some research on how to pull the instrument pod, and how to check and clean everything WYAIT (While You Are In There).

Wally,

This is a very effective approach- I seem to remember you giving me the same advice about 10 years ago on the late S4 when it had this problem and on my GTS I follow your advice as it often goes to pieces at about 5k rpm.

There is something about rev counters and me- it seems "the force is not in balance"!

Fortunately the rev limiter works- that is the best rev counter I know.

Regards

Fred

I'll take a look at the board, I need to replace the drive position indicator bulbs anyways. I have had the rest of the dash apart so why not. I was just concerned it might cause other problems. The electrical system works in mysterious ways in this car to my simple mind.

It works in mysterious ways for complicated minds!

Do let us know how you get on if you do pull the cluster to pieces.
