Replace Tie Rods with Ball Joints?
I'm about to change out my ball joints and steering rack boots and was wondering if the tie rods themselves are a wear item, meaning should they be replaced at the same time as the ball joints? Just to clarify, the ball joints I'm refering too are the tie rod ball joints (as noted in the PET).

Thom,
Its a good idea, esp. if the rest of the stuff was worn.
You might want to drop the rack, then remove and manipulate the U-joint that connects to the rack.
When the other stuff is worn, that might also be. I've replaced three, two of which were badly damaged but I'd never have known. They were bound-up in one plane. Power steering hid it. The third was completely shot and loose, causing slop.
Get it all.

FSharp9,
You're actually the reason I asked this question. I want to replace the ball joints and remembered talking to you and Pete about this at his garage.
Landseer,
I've dropped the rack a couple of times and I've had the u-joint off, it looks good. However, I'm going to be dropping the rack again to install new rack bushings and will check it again. (BTW, now I can say to the wife "see honey the experts on RL's are telling me I HAVE to change the rods as well".
Thanks for the advice guys

Mine has 80,000 km (50,000 miles). The outer tie rod ends were good, but the inner tie rod ends were worn and had excessive movement. Replacing them really tightened up my handling.

Thom--
These are all wear parts that are usually left on the car way too long before replacement. While you have the parts out in your hands anyway, all new is the best plan.

Delrin rack bushings are a must if you're dropping the rack ! The road feel is incredible without being harsh
like aluminum, should have been done at the factory
