Default How is knock controlled?

What is the system of knock sensing on a 32v engine?
I've converted my '85 Euro S 16v to megasquirt ecu and would like to extend the system with a knock sensor. I received this sensor of a 32v engine 928 from John Speake (thanks again, John!), and the physical installment is done. Only the wiring up to megasquirt needs to be done.

I've understood it's best to match the sensor with the knock control unit from the same car. However, I doubt whether this control unit was seperate or integrated in the ECU. Could anubody shed some light on this? Or maybe point me towards a direction? For instance VAG or GM cars that had this control unit seperate and would match the sensor of the 928. I could get one from the breakers then.

As I understand it, which I don't, its part of the EZ something brain, the ignition control brain and its fairly sophisticated gating the input of the sensor to match crank position so it ignores noise and detects which cylinder the knock is from.

Its a Bosch sensor and same basic one is also used I think in the 944 turbo.

For S4 and later its integrated into the EZ-K ecu. EZ-F in the 84-86 16V "Euro" cars (and 85-86 32V) doesn't have knock control.

The knock sensor of the 928 is a broad band device, all the filtering and noise detection is done in the EZK ECU (from 87>). What processing capability does Megasquirt have ?

As Hilton says, there is no knock control facility in the EZ-F ECU that was used on your EuroS.

It's not really practical to try and use a EZK ECU as it requires 2 knock sensors and a Hall sensor input.

If your engine is otherwise stock, then the chances of detontaion are very remote, due to the very conservative ignition timing maps.

Hi John,

The megasquirt has settings for only one sensor. therefore, I also only installed the one from you. It's positioned right behind the oil filler location in the V. The location where one of the 32V sensors would be.

My engine does have the occasional knock, despite using high octane fuel. But then again, the maps in the megasquirt are still not fully set on a dyno.

I will try and look for one of the modules as indicated on this link

I can send you the stock Euro S igntion map. You would need to somehow relate your MAP sensor load readings to the MAF load scale of the map.
