Anyone familiar with this Black 89 S4 5-speed in NJ?
Found it on CL and emailed the seller on Thursday morning (6/20.) Haven't heard anything back yet. $18,500 seems a little steep unless it is near flawless, but not completely out in left field. The hideous wheels hurt the value a bit too.

Pretty rare car.....either it is actually an 89 GT and he does not know it.......
or it a an equally rare 89 S4 5 speed.....not as nice, not as fast....
Price too High.....find out the VIN and we'll see........

He sounds a little aggressive. It's no fun selling a car, and he is trying to weed out the kids but I wonder if he will call you a "tire kicker" if you ask what most of us would call pertinent questions which are not covered in the ad? This forces everybody to ask and he should have to answer each time someone calls: Tbelt history, other history, does everything work, esp the A/C, how many miles on the clutch? I don't think there is a "racing transmission" per se and he is referring to the standard 5-speed, so this is hype, but we all know there are fewer of them. I agree w/you on the wheels; he's in GT territory on the price. If it is "maintained" there should be receipts.

Its what some call the dog-leg box.. on the grounds that you only use first at the start of a race, and after that having 2/3 and 4/5 in the same plane is easier to avoid missed shifts.
The shift lever and exhaust look like a GT's.

"not as nice, not as fast"? Trading low-end torque for a measly ten horsepower? I would call that splitting hairs if I had any left. It's a camshaft away from practically identical.
