Default Best oil for S4 in cooler climate

I know oil has probably been done to death. Many here seem to be running 20w50 and live in warmer climates. I'm in Scotland an don't think a 20w50 would protect the engine during cold starts in winter. According to the manual 10w40 15w40 5w40 10w30 or 5w50 would all be suitable for my climate. Anyone have any ideas which may be best? The engine only has 75000 miles on it but there are a few leaks. Also although not mentioned in the manual is there any reason not to consider a 10 or 15 w 50? Once I decided what grade oil I'm going to use I just need to find one with high ZDDP. Thinking about Millers oil. Not easy this oil business.

Cheers
Mike

A quick look at Wikipedia shows an average high/low in Winter for Edinburgh being 44.6/34.5, respectively.

Pretty simple....and an easy formula, no matter where you live.

Use the thinnest oil you can find, which gives you over 1 bar of oil pressure, at idle, on the hottest day....with the engine as hot as it can get.

Until absolutely proven incorrect....probably a good idea to make sure that the oil you use has a minimum of 1,000ppm of Zinc and Phosphorus.

Everything else is "too thick", for your climate and possibly will do damage to your cams and lifters.

Not all of us have the funds or patience to go out and buy 24 quarts+ of oil just to find one viscosity that gives us 1 bar of pressure at idle at our specific climate...

Not to cold.
A 5w40 would work for your winter. Look at this Mobil link for zinc/phosphorous values.

And... listen to Greg Brown.

Ok thanks folks. I have decided to try a 5W40 as I think this will be good all year round in my climate. I emailed Miller's Oils this morning asking about ZDDP and they got back to me in about an hour.

Thank you for your enquiry and the oil that I recommend for your car is our Trident 5/40 which has got well over 1200ppm of ZDDP. When your car was built it had an API SF specification which of course is now obsolete and that spec had a lot lower ZDDP level and as the specs altered over the years up to API SL then so did the level of ZDDP additive. I hope this information is of help to you.
So Miller's Trident 5/40 it will be at the next oil change in a few weeks.

MainePorsche, thanks for the link to the Mobil oil. Unfortunately I think they use different product names for some products in the US as they do in the UK which makes it hard to tell for sure if you are buying the correct/same product or not. I would have considered the Mobil 1 High Mileage but don't see a product marketed with that name in the UK.
