IIRC it's a Mann filter. Just ordered a couple of new filters from Pelican. I've never had the oil pan off (around 140k - odo went out, bought it at 131k). No leaks on the car anywhere. The last cold start it seemed like a 10-count or better to pressure. Once it had pressure - less than a second to build pressure after sitting maybe 20 minutes. I'm a bit reluctant to start it again till I get a clue what's going on.

What is happening is that the seal for the pickup tube is likely not getting a 100% seal. So when hot, things expand, seal is good.
When cold though, the seal is broken, and all the oil (therefor the prime) for the oil pump is lost. You then have to resuck a fresh slug of oil into the pump.

To fix this the pan will have to come off.

^^^ that's the one I was sort of afraid of - but the diagnosis seems to fit the symptoms. So what are all the "while I'm there" jobs with the oil pan off? Motor mounts, upgraded oil pan gasket, new sway bar bushings???

Talk about procrastination... new oil pick up tube gasket is now in place and slow oil pressure issue is gone. Good timing since the clutch just went out in the BMW. While I was in there - new motor mounts, silicone oil pan gasket and new oil level sender. The scary part was the old oil level sender had disintegrated in the sump, so there were bits of plastic and metal floating around in there.

FWIW I have been running Delvac 5W40 for several years now, with zero issues. I am in a moderate climate, ranging from 10-40C (50-100F), lowest hot pressure shown 2.5bar, instant pegged cold.
