Well, I first have to admit I was trolling a bit with my comment about the Clarion 7770, it's a fun topic. Of course, there is relationship between the MX401 and the 7770, since Clarion produced both, but it is not quite as close as interchangeable face plates. If you look closely at photos of the two units you will see they are actually not the same shape. The 7770 face plate sides curve inwards from bottom to top, while the MX401 has straight sides. That's not a good fit. That said, McIntosh outsourced mechanical drives- for example my MCD7008 has a Nakamichi changer (reworked and improved by Mc, the story goes). In the case of these two radios, a number of remarks have been made on the Web to the effect that they share a board. Maybe, but likely not as Mc usually did their own electronics. Unfortunately, McIntosh Laboratories has never cleared up this part of their history, so no way to tell for sure. Actually this thread just inspired me to try to contact someone who might know. I'll report if so.

I hope this was not too far off-topic, but I thought it might be useful to others interested in McIntosh car audio for their 928.

Default head units

I just yanked the Denon 950 out of my car. When I got the car I appreciated the periodicity of the unit- I remember the add campaign and how out-of-reach they seemed. I caved and wanted HD radio though. Now I just need to take a few minutes to get it to cough up one of my favorite discs that I forgot to eject.

Yeah, that's right HD FM radio, and a tangible disc for media...

SWEET,
I dug up the Seth Car on the 928 registry.

http://www.928registry.org/1989-928/1989-928GT-1171.htm

This car used to have a MAC in it. (scroll to the bottom, it's listed)
Unfortunatly, the pics show the same NAK that you have in your 79, so I guess that doesn't help you. I am surprised at my brain even being able to remember that his car had one in it at one point.

Again, I'll see if I have it in one of my folders on the computer. That might take some time..

BTW, the install of the NAK in your 79 is one of the cleanest I've seen. All the OB's with a "non din" opening are usually hacked to $##T to make them fit!!

I"ll keep digging for pics...

Thanks for the effort. Much appreciated. I decided to stick with the Nak. I just bought a new one from Woofers.com. I figure I can swap it myself as it will just plug and play. I still would like to find a picture of the Mcintosh though. So if you find it, please post it.

Yes, I did a lot of research when I selected the Nak. I knew it would fit very well and give great sound while still looking fairly stock.

Tell me about it. The console trim piece is NLA. It took 3 years to find a mint one that wasn't hacked up. Mine was good but had that little knick next to the radio which you can see in the picture. The replacement trim solved that nicely.

Sweet, what did you end up going with on your radio??? I like the look of that MX406... Tell you what though my Blau Toronto BT420 is a nice bit of kit... Have that in my '95, looking for something for my '93. Was thinking of using one of my modded Beckers (CR210 I think it is), but man...I do love the streaming and wireless and such of that BT420...

+1 for the BT420. Love the features and the sound. Only minus is the display isn't quite bright enough. I hope some smart electron jockey on here will hack the face plate and figure a way to adjust the brightness and view angle settings ala the CDR-220 mod.

I just replaced it with the same model. Turns out the removable face plate was faulty so now I have a new "spare" headi unit.
