I have a new waterpump that was purchased years ago that came with the 93 GTS I recently purchased. The pump is in new condition but after reading the threads on all the issues with metal impellers should I just trash it and buy a new one with the plastic or use it, but make a point of replacing it before it hits 20K kilometres?

Buy one of Ed's Guardian water pumps. Better bearings, it's designed to shear the high speed coupling if any thing binds the impeller, and will keep your valves from crashing. Ed drills and pins the impeller so it won't move. With Ed's pump and a Porken tensioner, you'll be set for years of trouble free driving. Send Ed the pump you have as a core. I had a Porsche rebuilt pump, and swapped it for the Guardian.

It will also depend on what WP you have - new or rebuilt - and who made it or rebuilt it.

Does it have the "Do It Yourself" manual transmission, or the superior "Fully Equipped by Porsche" Automatic Transmission?

Unfortunately, I didn't purchase the water pump and its history is unknown.
roger, I'll be contacting you soon with a big list of parts required

If it is a NEW Porsche OE pump then it's ok with a metal impeller.
If it is a rebuilt pump or some random brand pump it is NOT ok.
Most rebuilt pumps have a sticker on the mating surface.

A rebuilt metal impeller pump can eat the block in a few thousand miles. BTDT and have (sets of) pictures. Unless you're damn sure it's a Porsche OE NEW pump, throw it away, or send it to Ed Stanke for a proper rebuild into a Guardian Pump.

A new NOS water pump, with a metal impeller must be a Laso. Porsche quit making pumps with metal impellers a long, long, time ago.
A metal Laso, without the "added" impeller bushing (Laso pump version #3.....or #4.....not sure) is virtually guaranteed engine "death".

How can I determine if mine falls under this category? It was purchased about 2-3 years ago.

Even then, people would have had "old stock" to sell off.
