Since this issue of impeller-eaten blocks became wide spread, now when I do a timing belt tension check or to otherwise inspect the belt system on a history-unknown-to-me 928, in addition to anything else I might do, I pull the left-side cover and look at the water pump pulley. If the leading edge of the pulley is touching the leading edge of the timing belt I know that the impeller is about to begin touching the block. If, in addition, the belt is tracking on the left side cam gear towards the rear and then I know the impeller has ALREADY been touching the block.
If the belt is in the middle of the sprocket and not touching the leading edge of the pump pulley (ideally the belt is in the middle), then that's a good sign.

Rebuilt pump - one of the ones that fail. How much did you pay for it?
Do not panic - you just need to keep an eye on it and check it regularly.

Does it have the "Do It Yourself" manual transmission, or the superior "Fully Equipped by Porsche" Automatic Transmission?

It's honestly a crap shoot. I put one of these on my car in '06 and it lasted until last year when I did the belt/pump. I've also pulled a dozen or so of these off due to leaking/noise in the past couple of years. Not a chance I'd take again but if you keep an eye and ear on it you should be fine.
