Default Has anyone bypassed the heater control valve?

Okay, I don't need hot air coming into the cabin. I closed off the control valve already, but is there anyway to just reroute it. I've done this in a gti before, which was quite simple, the in and the out were right next to each other. Has anyone ever done this? Any photos or ideas. Thanks.

On my GTS I removed the vacuum pod and zip tied it shut. Is that what you meant? Don't forget to plug the vacuum line.

Connecting the two hoses means some of your coolant is bypassing the radiator. If you want to completely isolate the heater core, just plug both lines going to it. You can zip-tie the existing HCV so it stays closed. There are undoubtedly manual shutoff valves that can be put in the return hose to the pipe under the reservoir, so heat doesn't migrate back through the return to the heater core again, if you feel the need.

Correction:

Below is the correct 3/4 " manual heater control valve with petcock.

I used a Petcock that allowed me to turn off the flow of coolant completely. You might be able to find the part reference via search here. Good Luck!

I use a 1/2" 12vdc solenoid valve operated by one of the switches programmed by Hans on the soft- touch windows/sunroof/trunk enhanced switch panel.

I put a U bend pipe where the heater in and return pipes are at the heater element, works a treat here in 40c +.

I'm thinking that you might be better off blocking the the flow completely, vs. just bypassing the heater core. Is you heater valve tied closed?

All you have to do is plug the return line. Unclamp the return line under the plastic cover near the windshield wipers, driver's side, and insert a plug, then reclamp in place. This was done to my 89 by the PO and I had no hot air. I had to cut a couple of inches off the hose to reverse this.

Very cool, haven't seen that solution before. Couldn't that be wired to the circuit that opens the vacuum valve at the vacuum manifold?

here is the thread that shows the petcock valve solution. I used it and works well in cental Texas where we don't have allot of cold weather. Got mine at O Riellys. I pulled the heater valave and inserted the petcock in its place. I capped the vacuum line.

others have inserted the petcock into the line along the bulk head so during the winter they open the petcock and have normal heater valve function but can be completely blocked off during the summer.

I have zip tied the valve shut, but heat still comes through the cabin vents. If I replace the valve, and heat still comes through. What would be my next step? Thank you all for your input....

I also use the petcock idea, and it works great. you can get the part at Napa as well. Just tie it into the line and in the winter and close off in the summer. Works great

I believe the threads her have all the details if you like this approach and would still like to have A/C occasionally.

Connect the valve to manifold vacuum. Put a "T" in below the vacuum one-way valve and run a hose from it to the hot water valve. Plug the old line. Done and done for about $4.

Sure but running 2 wires from the switch was so easy.
