On an S4 you can actually see your powdercoated cam covers.

Next logical step then..is to remove the hood. Right?

set the pressure, and remove the gauge, thats what i did. i also had the open element KNN filter like Mac, the power loss due to heat was pretty apparent. simple, whew it was hot down there. KNN style filters flow more for "more power" and rely on the oil/cotton media to get the dirt that a tight weave normal style filter would catch. the more dirt, the more area to catch dirt..... if you get me.

Dunno, cuz like stated, its a bad idea.

While trying to track down the part number for my horsepower decreaser,
I asked a product specialist @ K&N if they have ever addressed the issue with oil contaminating the MAF.
This is his reply:

We have not only addressed it, but we have proven it to be impossible.

Damn, I hate it when I get caught giving bogus advise for years.

So all this talk about the K&N filter,
and since we are heading out of town with the car this weekend, I decided to spend some time on looking into the stock filter box again.
With the heat gun and a nice round screwdriver handle I was able to mold the box enough so that it would fit.
It was hitting the longer fuel rails and just misses the fuel gauge.

The reason I am not worried about the fuel gauge is because it is threaded directly into the rail and is solid. If you put them into a fitting then yes over time the fitting will stretch and the gauge will come loose and leak.
Ran them for years on 1/4 mile drag cars and that was the rule.
I also have the hood up as much as I drive it and am always watching and running my hands over all the lines and fittings checking for leaks, and watching for rubbing.
One can never be to careful as I just about lost it due to the oil pump gear coming loose.

For those joking about removing the hood, maybe you remember the pic where I went down town with out the hood to pick up the wife at bingo the night it first ran after the engine rebuild and Tec-4 GT install

The FP gauges fail internally, not the fittings.

Ya I heard a few of them failed that way as well.
Glad I spent the extra cash and got a good quality fluid filled gauge made for big vibrating drag engines.
But ILL keep my eye on it. Now dont jinx me

I wonder how it is that people expect to notice the MAF being damaged? Most don't seem to notice until they are so far out of spec it fails smog tests or effects driveability.
