Big Dave,

At the time, I wasn't sure how they were getting up there. You could see some remnants of nut shells and other evidence on the intake manifold and there were actually two nests (one on top of the air cleaner and one inside the HVAC vent next to the fan), so I didn't want to take any chances with only a few mothballs in one or two areas. Also, I saw that they had chewed on the flannel car cover in one area, so I went a little overboard with the "mothball-in-socks" idea.

I had used some traps and poison in the garage before, but the mothballs really did the trick. This was annual winter storage up north where we didn't have access to the car until spring.

Probably wouldn't recommend it for everyone, but it sure worked in this case.

I had one that made a next in the pocket behind the hood hinge on the passenger side last winter. Had to take half the car apart it seemed to get all the nest and stuff out of there and it still took a while before the HVAC air didn't stink.

Put out a lot of traps this winter using peanut butter and caught several including 2 inside the car (not sure how they get in there) but at least no smell problems so far this spring.

That's what I do every Winter.
I put mothballs on the floor around the car.
Never had problems.

hahaha.
when I got my S4 it had been in a storage for 2 years..mice everywhere..it took me 4 weeks to repair the wiring inside the car. Yet another 2 weeks to remove all carpets and clean...It took about a year before the smell was totally gone.
Yesterday I started to prepare to pull the engine. Went into the glove box to store the fuel pump relay..6 sets of eyes staring back at me....here we o again..

One thing not to overlook checking is the exhaust system. While the mouse may sleep in the air filter, where is it hoarding its winter food stockpile? Resonators make nice storage chambers.

I have heard both sides of the mothball effectiveness.

This works great in the garden too. Mix with water and spray directly on plants to deter rabbits and deer.

And then, there’s always this!

As long as they are alive they are a threat. Mothballs may discourage but killing them is the only way to be sure they can't cause damage. Poisons and killing traps are still the only 100% solution.

I'm not inclined to kill them but have tried trapping. Mice can jump several feet and with amazing accuracy they can jump up and thru small holes, so you really need a door trap or a very tall can. Peanut butter works great.

A better solution though is to just drive the car as regularly as you can.

Fumigate the garage regularly with insect foggers. Keeps the bugs out and chases/kills mice as a fringe benefit.
