Being retired Air Force I have almost everything insured with USAA. However, they will not insure my 928 because it's a classic, so they have me insured with American Collectors. Exactly what the relationship is between the two companies I do not know.
A friend of mine (a civilian with no ties to the military) has an SL500, and he was complaining about the cost of his insurance, so I suggested he contact American Collectors to see what they could do for him. He got better coverage for about half the premium.
I'm not making any promises, or even implying that you will save money with them, but it may not be a bad idea to check with them to see what they can do for you. I do not work for them, nor do I have any interest in their company - the only reason I'm bringing this up is because everyone here is so helpful, and I want to do my part to help this great family of 928 lovers.
They can be reached at www.americancollectors.com. Good luck.

I'm retired Navy, USAA couldn't come close to the coverage I get thru COSTCO. I saved almost $920.00 per year for the same coverage over my old carrier, and my collector cars are insured thru Hagerty, with agreed value.
Pays to shop around.

I'm Farmers Ins and full coverage on my '88 is about $660.00 per year. The daughter has not been put on the insurance yet so this will change.

Paul, I am retired AF also and have my '85 928S and '80 911SC insured through USAA. They have never mentioned needing to go with American Collectors. Perhaps I am "grandfathered" in?
Does your policy from American Collectors come with any annual mileage or driving restrictions?
I have collector plates on my 911--which come with an annual mileage restriction from the DMV. But the 928 is my DD.
Best regards,

American Collectors, like Grundy and Hagerty and others offering "Collector Car" insurance, have restrictions on vehicle operation. As a retired outside agitator and a grandfathered USAA member, I tried to go with American Collectors but couldn't because my girlfriend is on the title of my 928 and we would have to be married for them to issue a policy. I went with Grundy, but my use restrictions are that the car has to be driven either for pleasure or to go to car events. If your shark is a daily driver, a collector policy will not work for you.

I have used American Collectors for years on any car I have that is over 25 years old. If it is newer, they really aren't competitive but on older cars they can't be beat. There are some limitations and it can't be a daily driver but your premium is based on declared value. I just paid $280 for the full year for my '84 Euro and my '79 convert.
A few years ago I had a garage mishap on my Ferrari 308. I called them and they sent out an adjuster and a week later I had a check to cover the cost with no deductible. It was small @$650, to pull a dent from a rocker and repaint it but it was hassle free and it was my fault in my garage while working on it.

Took the advice given and decided to check into American Collectors. I just signed up for a new policy today. They have a "Freedom Tier" which exactly matches the way I use the car. You pay a little more but it gives you some freedom to use the car for enjoyment (7000 miles per year). The yearly payment was $458.00 in NJ. I was paying $1500+ through Geico. Thanks for the advice.

I looked into American Collectors a few years back..but was not thrilled with USAA farming it totally out to them... I've got a separate policy (Farmers) for my track car, and motorcycles to which I added my teenage son to....since my USAA policy has too many cars (4) on which they would raise the rates on if I added him there...
Last thing I wanted was yet another policy for my "classic car" insurance...but those rates sound pretty good... I could move three cars onto the collector policy.. Hmm....
USAA seems to moving to this model where they affiliate themselves with other companies....but don't handle the stuff directly. On the surface it's OK...but in reality it could be a pain...My moms mortgage was through USAA...who worked through GMAC.....who is now bankrupt and is now owned by OCWEN.....and information isn't available through USAA anymore..pain in the buttocks...

I've been insuring my 1987 928 through USAA along with 3 other vehicles for years (at least 4 or 5 anyhow). Just recently, they sent a flyer related to insuring through American Collectors. I called them and they quoted me about $500 per year with $20K agreed value which is about $100 less than what USAA is currently charging (for who knows what they would pay). I also insure my house through USAA and carry a $1M umbrella policy too. I might have to shop around, but would have to save multiple hundreds per year for equal coverage to pry me away from USAA.

I choose $18k as an agreed upon value. Moved the other vehicles from Geico to Allstate. Saved over $2400 per year in total and got better coverage for the Porsche. Geico could not definitively tell me what I would receive if the Porsche was totalled.

+1 I also use Hagerty for my Lincoln. Plus you get there quarterly subscription, that's always a good read.

American Collectors insurance is only for those that want collector car ins.. (set agreed value, low miles, event only ) etc kind of insurance. Typically, these collector policies give you full coverage agreed value that is cheaper than keeping it on a standard driving policy with liability/comp/collision...
