Default Vinyl wrap.. my adventure

So after reading Jame's thread about how he wrapped one of his many 928's this got me thinking.
James thread . . https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...ge-95-gts.html

My paint is so far gone I really don't know what to do with it. Tried numerous times to fix it, but nothing can fix bad PO respray. I just can't see putting the thousands into the car at this moment with a new paint job.

So this seemed to be an alternative for the time being, so I ordered some "Hot Rod Red" hoping it would be somewhat close to Guards Red.. Not quite but close..

As you can see..

But none the less I thought I would continue with a test..

My mirror before...

6 years of daily driving in NJ....

So long story short here is attempt #1. Did it go perfect? No and I didn't expect it. I did learn a bit as I did this so I will take it off and try again. The mirrors really should be off the car anyway.

But I am still impressed with how it went and really might consider doing the whole car. Have a lot of practice to do but I think it is doable.

Heck I wallpapered the kitchen and 2 bathrooms

I'll keep you posted on how this goes.

Holy crap that vinyl looks good! I can't believe how good the color match is to Guards Red!

Who is your source?

It's not that close but close enough.. Auto Vinyl Solutions

http://autovinylsolutions.com/Gloss_...ss_Hot_Rod_Red

A few things to note. Up close it looks like orange peel, it's not a deep gloss. Not so concerned about that as my drivers side has no gloss now anyway

It also scratches very easily, a light finger nail scrape does leave a visible line. If push comes to shove though and the panel looks bad, pull it off and put a fresh sheet on..

But, given that.. It still looks better than my paint now. You can also wax it just as you would paint to give it some UV protection.

Check out this guys videos, I spent many hours watching these and others...

It still looks really good though. When are you going to wrap the whole car?

Going to practice on a few things first, just did my IPOD just because I could.

Once I feel comfortable with the process I will start on the larger panels such as the roof and hood and take it from there.

At around $400.00 to get enough to do the entire car plus some it's not too bad.

looks pretty good from here, the mirror with the tight corners is probably the hardest to get perfect anyway. my car also had a overall respray many years ago, and only looks good 20 feet away. keep updating your progress, as I am tempted to go the wrap route also.

Keep your eyes peeled... I'll have a G. Red wrap pics soon...hoping for a VERY GOOD match. We have looked at several colors very closely and I think we are about as close as we are likely to get. More to come. IIRC, we are getting a vinyl from Hexis.

Care to share which color you found to match?

More than happy to help. I am interested in seeing how the wrap covers the "Porsche" logo on the rear. Is the vinyl pushed into the letters or does it just go over the top leaving a small gap underneath? Do you plan on covering the wing?

How do you clean vinyl wraps? I hear you can use commercial products without abrasive polishes and waxes. I'm thinking along the lines of Meguiar's Ultimate Quick Detailer, and Ultimate Wash. 3M I hear even recommends all-purpose cleaners. Simple Green comes to mind, but a much diluted 10:1 ratio.

I hear you treat it just like paint.. except keep away from abrasives.
