The new chain guides are in and all is well I used The Porken 32V tool to reset the cam timing and confirmed with the dial indicator (the closing time of the exhaust valve).

As can be seen from the pictures it was time for the old guides to come out.

I appreciate the posted comments and shared experiences of all that chimed in on this thread.
