Rear hatch MUST be closed to start a 928?
Guys...stoopid question here but does the rear hatch have to be latched/closed to start the car IF you have a factory alarm? There is some kind of solenoid thingee that just mangled on my no start 928. My car is an '81 euro...auto car.

Not a requirement with any 928 factory alarm that I'm aware of. Of course that doesn't cover the 30+ years that a previous owner had that might include installation of an aftermarket alarm/immobilizer. The factory alarm mode is cleared by cycling the key in the driver's door lock. The hatch can trigger an alarm event if opened without using the key, or if the switch in the hatch lock isn't working correctly; the alarm module ignores the hatch-closed switch if the key is used in the hatch lock to open the hatch.
Alarms, immoblizers and such pretty much all have one thing in common-- they interrupt one of three critical engine systems. Commonly they interrupt the starter motor trigger (50) circuit so the engine won't crank to start. Some interrupt the ignition or fuel pump circuits so the engine can't run. Most aftermarket alarm installers are not keen on interrupting fuel or ignition, since a failure while driving the car could be very dangerous. So they set them up so an alarm violation just keeps the car from cranking.
