Hey all, been lurking on the forums for a while, but just registered. I'm looking to buy my first 928 and i figured I'd have to join sooner or later.
The knowledge and advice on this forum makes me feel like I might have a chance at actually being able to enjoy the 928 i end up purchasing, instead of the whole experience being a nightmare.
I'm in Dallas so I can start looking forward to those breakfasts too

Thanks guys, the search continues. I've been looking on ebay, the classifieds here, carsforsale, and hemmings. Are there additional good sources that i might be missing?
I saw what SeanR currently has for sale:
https://rennlist.com/forums/vehicle-...8-s4-auto.html
It's awesome, but too rich for my blood.
I was hoping around 12K would be enough to get me into a well sorted example that would only need routine maintenance (oil changes, fluids, etc.) Having never done a TB/WP (even though it's routine maintenance) I would want one with that service performed recent enough that I would have time to meet some Dallas guys that could hopefully teach/help me (steaks and beer of course). Am I being unrealistic?
Judging by some of the posts I've read I didn't think this was unreasonable, but then you have to factor in the fact some of those posts are quite some years ago and prices change.

craigslist.org? One needs to exercise caution with any 928 as you generally get what you pay for, but the more unknowns the more risk, history is valuable, not always avail. so a PPI from a knowledgable shop is really, really good insurance. B/c Craigs list is free, it may have bottom feeders, and scammers. You can probably get someone here to look at it as there is an active group in the Dallas area. Take your time, go to one of their get to gethers; you'll learn a ton. There are threads or links to step by step instructions for almost anything. Search "Pirtle" or

Welcome!
I also suggest you take the plunge with $20 for the premium membership. You will be able to exchange private messages, see all photos, and get a really nifty Rennlist decal for your new shark. It's the best money you can spend on your 928 adventure (except for the $59 delrin steering rack bushings)
So in looking at this one:
http://dallas.craigslist.org/mdf/cto/3767015121.html
Here's the latest response from the owner:
I had 3 928 experts from the local Porsche club look over it for about 2 and a half hours on a pre buy.
They had lots of good to very good things to say. The only things I heard about negative is you
could do a refresh on the timing belt( i believe because of age), and take the intake off and replace the
delicate parts under it, replace the wiring, and repaint it. Preventative things.
You cannot drive it. I have no insurance on it. Best I can do is drive you around the block.
Are any of the 3 928 experts (Dallas guys prob) that looked at this on this forum? Is the fact he won't let me drive it common or a red flag? Did the experts drive it I wonder...
Also in his initial contact he said:
Had a timing belt replaced (and water pump) about 10K miles ago.
So this has to mean it's been sitting a while if it needs a new belt already right?

It is frustrating when someone says one thing and means something else. People don't usu have to replace "wiring" when they do an top end refresh. I'm assuming they mean hoses and vacuum lines. Yes the intke is ugly. Funny why the rest of the engine bay is so clean and the intake has been stripped and left. The usu "accepted" limits on a tbelt are 5 years and 60,000 miles. In that one inch stack of receipts should be one for this. Some have gone over the 5 years, b/c few of us use our sharks as DDs, so we have low miles on the belt, but that being said, it is not good for a belt to sit in one spot for long periods of time. I'm thinking the insurance lapse is more of a problem, besides indicating that it sat . . ..
Someone has to be able to drive it and see how it pulls. It sounds like he isn't particularly flexible on this and the car might be fine, but that could be reason to walk away. He has to understand the buyer's POV too. This would preclude a PPI. Not good.
I also think he is high on the price.
Look for overspray.
