Default Wheel Locks

Just in case anyone runs in to this in the future, as I'm sure many have and will continue to do so. If you lose your wheel lock key, this is all you need to get them off and you will not damage your wheels.

You can pick up all of this at Sears or the equivalent.

22mm wood/metal hole saw
Craftsman lug nut removal tool
Breaker bar
Long screw driver to pop off the bits that the 22mm hole saw leaves
Hammer to pound on the lug nut removal tool.

I forgot to include the beer or two you might go through as you remove all four. Less than 30 minutes for all.

The only person ever deterred by a set of wheel locks is the owner.

One of the receipts that came with my '82 was:

"tow car to shop, drill out eight (!) wheel lock nuts."

My wheel locks reside in a small can in my garage.

I modified my wheel lock lug nuts, by drilling and tapping a hole in the nut and then turned up a screwed end cap, which I drilled two axial holes in the flanged section to take a "pin" spanner. The outside diameter of the flanged section was sized to take the Porsche Plastic Cap that fits over the wheel locks and when installed looks like locked lug nuts are fitted. I keep the pin adjustable pin spanner in my small tool bag.

The only thing they will do is cause some delay if someone decides they require my wheels and tyres. This delay maybe all that is required for the potential thief to move on!

About 50 years ago I had a 1962 Corvette. Had two wheel covers stolen in a shopping ctr. parking lot, obviously because the two wheels were on a side that faced away from the shops. Easy to pop a wheel cover. Lot tougher to steel wheels. I wonder if the locks are really necessary if you garage your car as I do. I used the locks for quite a period of time and got rid of them after having a problem removing them.

My wheels are worth a lot to me... but not much to anyone else these days...

Yep...wheel locks. The government must of been involved. Bothers no one but the owner.
