Motor randomly seized

I will be checking the timing belt tomorrow. i wish i knew more of the history on this car it seems like it was abused. it also looks like it had a very small fire under the hood as all of the foam stuff is melted but thepait on the top isnt messed up and the wiring is in ok shape.

When it “tried to run” did it back fire? That could cause the timing belt to jump and valves to hit.
Or, did it slowly bind? That would indicate bearing seizure, or the like.
There is also possibility of hydro lock, in which case it should turn the other way, but use caution in doing so.
Hopefully it just let loose some carbon buildup which, hopefully, didn’t bend valves.
Checking timing belt is a good place to start.
Hoping for the best, keep us posted.

Still would like to know engine number to determine if it might have been an engine swap of an automatic's engine into the 5 speed car sometime before you bought it. Just curious from root cause perspective.
The automatic setup has caused more than its share of engine failures (Thrust bearing failure).
Also, where are you located? Might be interested in what's left.

Define cheap. If you are thinking of dropping in a used motor without pulling the heads and doing a refresh, kind of a waste of time IMHO. I don't see any reasonable action ahead of you that most would call cheap, that wouldn't in the longer run be even more expensive.
