There is a 1980 928 with a few issues for sale locally. I'm tempted to pick it up but I keep thinking it may be more trouble than it's worth.

What should I look out for? Decent deal or run away?

The 300 hp Euro S with a stick is a fun car.....trans rebuild gets expensive quickly. Sounds like a motivated seller so might negotiate.... Do not put much faith in the odometer reading as it was changed when federalized.
The question about " decent deal " is hard to answer but this is not a car that you could flip for a profit just depends on if you have always wanted a 928.
