Who here has added an aftermarket alarm with remote start? Was it very difficult, as in any 928 specific problems that you ran into? Any particular brand/model that you would recommend? How about push button start anyone have this feature?

 

The more accurate question would be is 'how many of you have removed after market alarms'.
The answer probably approaches 100 %.

Care to elaborate? I don't care so much about the alarm but remote start would be Great! remote door lock/unlock as well

 

What part of remote start do you like ?? The one where it overheats, or a fuel line bursts ? or someone just shatters the window and drives away ?

 

^^^ I'm with James on that. I can't think of a reason why I'd want to start any of my cars remotely. I want to be sitting in the drivers seat to be sure 'all systems are go' and respond instantly if there's a problem.

While in college in Fort Wayne I worked at a Ford store. Had free demos to drive. One cold morning started up a Mustang Mach 1 with the super cobrajet 428 ram air with drag pack option. Part of that package was a front mounted external oil cooler. I started it and it blew off the oil line to the cooler !! I shut it off and it was O K .........

 

It's nice on my Saturn to warm up on cold winter mornings... Just sayin'

 

Regarding the remote start:
Yes, we in the North country like a warm truck/car on a cold winter morning, but anyone who preserves these 928's would never drive the car in the Northern climes in the winter due to the salt.

Regarding aftermarket alarms:
The 928 electrics can/will be corrupted by the module that is used, and the shoddy job by these installers is even more of a crime. Power drain, corrupted grounds, etc. makes for trouble. My PO wanted door remote lock/unlock so he had a whole 'alarm system' installed. He apparently wasn't troubled by the issues it caused, but I was. EVERY wire they touched was basically sacrificed. They had the polarity of our light switch wires misunderstood and this was really problematic when they hacked in there. They cut up and really hacked the wiring from the factory alarm module. I designed my own system and wired it myself. They might break a window and steal my sunglasses (my radio face is easily removed when in urban areas), but they will NEVER be able to steal the car unless they hall it away. I even have a small red LED nicely (and quietly) placed so they know it will be a hassle for them. Do it yourself or have someone specifically recommended here do it.

I agree what was said about the aftermarket alarms.

Pre heating your car and warming up the motor by remote starter and letting it idle is probably the worst und most unefficient way to do it. The warm up time for the motor is very long and the internal parts are longer under mores "stress". Start the motor and dirve it immediatly at moderate RPMs until warmed up, done.

If you NEED a warm car AND motor in the morning you need a pre heater. When I lived in Texas people had no idea what this is and thought I´m crazy.

The pre heater is completely independent and is simply a combustion chamber that heats up your coolant in your car WITHOUT the motor running. It has it´s own fuel line to the tank, own fuel pump, own coolant circulation pump and electronics (clock with timer or remote).

Function: The heater is mounted in the coolant line in the direction of the flow of coolant. After it is turned on the combustion chamber fires up and starts to pre heat the coolant. When the coolant reaches about 35º C the electric pump is started and pumps coolant through the cylinder head an heat exchanger.

When the coolant is warm enough it will turn on the HVAC fan, warm up the interior and defrost the windscreen. All automatic, all independent. When coolant temperature reaches 70º C the system maintains the heat at this level. Dependent of the outside temeperature this process will take about 20 minutes.

BTW These systems are much more sophisticated then remote starters and very efficient. Fuel consumption is about 1 cup in 30 minutes. Because nearly all fuel is used to heat and not to overcome friction in your engine.
The new remotes allow you to adjust the inside temperature of your car from a distance and tell you via an audio signal when the car is "ready to go".

Our family Honda uses a pre-heater which is controlled by my cell phone. A short text message and it turns on, gives my a reply when ready (optional) and the best part is that you can ask for the status. It will tell you the battery status and which antenne it is using for a signal. You can roughly locate your car with this gadget in case you want to know if your wife is really shopping or if the car has been stolen.
The big advantage with the cell phone is that there is no distance limit.

If you arrive at an airport you can turn on the heat right on time while waiting for your bags.... :-)

 

You need a webasto :-). I have it in my BMW and its great! Agree with the others, don't hack up your wiring to fit low quality alarm modules.

I installed a Clifford alarm in my 928 but intentionally did not connect the start block and remote start stuff. I just use it to lock/unlock the doors :-)

 

While I would never install a remote start in my 928, I did install one in a previous company E350 and would have one in my current model if the factory security didn't make it such a pita.

What I like...
5 below zero outside. Wake up and press the remote start. By the time I walk out the door, ice/snow is melted off the windshield and I'm greeted by a warm interior.

I'm a field tech and mainly work outside. I'm freezing my *** off on a roof for hours and I have a warm vehicle when I'm done. In the summer when it's 105 out and I'm ready to leave a job site, I have a nice cool vehicle instead of a hotbox.

Now, if any of my vehicles overheated from idling, I'd fix the problem with the vehicle. If it's started and forgotten about the system automatically turns off at 20 minutes.

I don't worry about burst fuel lines because I maintain my vehicles.

Breaking a window out and driving off won't happen because it's impossible to move a locked shifter or drive with a locked steering wheel. I also installed the system properly where the vehicle shuts down as soon as the parking brake is released or the brake pedal pressed.

Remote start with audio warning (Step away, remote engine starting)

Remote all lock and all unlock (Doors) with Audio warning...

Remote all open and all close (Windows and Sunroof) linked to one touch Windows/Sunroof switches from here...

Anti Hijack system - linked to remote start to prevent theft...

Interior Microphone and exterior speaker (to talk to hijackers I think lol)

Spare circuits on remote to add other things...

I use one for a remote Purge on my Nitrous...

Various other add ons....

And ALL have worked perfectly for around 4 years now with absolutely NO problems at all....

I use the remote start in the winter, to prewarm the car/engine before I drive it...

NEVER a problem with it, NO bust hoses ...nothing...

To the original OP...go for it, it improves the 928s electrics, drastically...

Cost a few years ago in the UK, was around £1000 including fitting...and IMHO ...worth EVERY penny...
