Default Anyone interested in the 2013 Nevada Open Road Challenge (NORC) in May

Bill and I are getting the car ready for the 2013 NORC in May. Looks like I'll be running the 170 mph class again,
with an unlimited tech speed. Bill won't be able to make the trip, so I was wondering if anyone local would want
to make the trip to Ely with me. I need someone to drive the support vehicle and provide assistance getting
the car set up for tech and at the starting line. I plan on leaving the Bay Area on Thursday morning (5/16) and
getting back on Monday (5/20). I'm paying for a motel room with 3 beds, so lodging and fuel costs are covered.

This would be a great opportunity to see what Open Road Racing is all about. See all the other cars, talk to the
drivers, and be at the starting line.

Of course if you were interested in navigating, that is also an option, but it does require a lot of personal safety
equipment. Driving suit, helmet, gloves, shoes, arm restraints, head and neck restraint, head sock, and fire
proof underware. If you're going to race in the future, you may need this stuff anyway.

Oh, and you need to be over 18 to be allowed on the starting grid, and 21 to sit in the navigator seat.

Here are a few shots from the last race:

I would love to come help, and i would only need a hans and arm restraints and a balaclava as i have all the other stuff.. Alas, I will be just back from a 3 week trip, and don't think i can come that weekend.. Verrrrry tempting though!!

Best of luck at the event!

Richard,

Thanks for the response. Sorry you couldn't make it this time. I'll be running in September for the
Silver State Classic (12-15th), if you're serious about trying Open Road Racing.

Thanks,
George

Folks, this is a great opportunity. Also, if you would like to navigate, I believe I have all or nearly all of the necessary safety equipment for someone like me (on the small side: 5'8", medium helmet, 8.5 size boots).

George's car is a sled - remarkably stable at high speed. George takes a lot of drama out of the race with his smooth, capable driving too. The navigator's primary job is to keep time, as George needs very little prompting for turns since he knows the course so well and the car is so amazingly stable in turns. Most of the race is "cruising" at the desired average speed (170 or so), with a relatively short blast up to the 200+MPH target in a section of the course where top speed is measured.

George's primary need is for someone to help him transport support supplies to the race in his van, help him do the final preparation at the race (mostly just swapping wheels/tires, taping seams and doing final checks). You would also get a chance to do some short "practice runs" below race speed out on the course a day or two before the actual race and help George with some final engine tuning.

Hi George,

You're welcome. Thank you for the offer.! I'll be in touch when I get back. Maybe the Sept event will be better timing wise.

In the meantime, I will have to settle for my 155 mph class (electronic limiter) on the German A roads next week... I have always thought it interesting that over here (Ger) you can go faster on the highway than on most any race track save the 'ring which happens to actually also be on a public road, and not need all the gear and complications of the event organisers. Just get in, turn the key, and go.. No fuss, no muss..

Granted, you still need to know how to drive, get used to the speed, and the car needs to be in top tech shape.. But, the TUV here are pretty good about allowing what drives on the street.. The other laugh I get is getting 40+ mpg going over 100mph in the diesels.. Audi A6, BMW 5 & 7 diesels are pretty good nowadays...

Keep up the 928 flag, I think it is great you are running these events still...!!

This is from a 730 Diesel... When my car is done, I would love to bring it here and tour the German countryside... The roads are so great here..

I now have a navigator for the NORC. Van, here in the Bay Area, has stepped up and will accompany me on this adventure.
Thanks Bill for the NorCal928 email blast, and all those that have expressed an interest. I'll be meeting with Van next week
to go over the course notes, safety equipment, schedule, and race video. He's had lot's of experience in auto racing and
hopefully he'll enjoy ORR.

Thanks,
George
