Default HEAD LIGHT ADJUSTMENT

Need help on my 90s4 headlight adjustment. It seems like the headlight have a slight drop down from the base,so when it is on the headlight aims high up. I had to manually raised the **** in the front to raise it up to a full stop upright. Is any other way to set the headlight? Somehow after the body shop things are always a bit screwy ...

Not exactly clear on your issue.
Not seated properly or lack of proper motor/linkage excursion causing you to have to hand wind it up.
Will be an easy fix, but you must post pics with light up and down for clarity.

There are adjustment stops inside the fender - take off the wheel, splash shield and fender liner - you will be able to see it clearly

Hello Alan,
How are you ? Yes there are the east-west adjustments at the end of the torsion bar and the north-south adjustment bolt under the fender, but the OP alluded to the headlight having to be manually wound up to full upright. He also alluded to the car being in the shop prior to the problem. We don't know where the work was, but not seating the linkage properly (if it were removed) can cause lack of appropriate excursion. It may be some combination of both seating/linkage adjusting, but I think some good pics would be helpful.

Default Head lights

The body shop did removed both head lights for painting the fenders-touch up, so now when the lights are on both head lights are not fully up to the up right position. I see both sides where the lights sit have a gap from the base of the head lamps and i have to manually raised them up another half inch. Otherwise both lights are aiming at the window of the front car.

The motor has internal switching to stop it. The arm from the motor has splines and you can put that arm on in different positions iirc. It sounds like that arm is not in the right spot and when the motor stops from the switch, the arm is not in the full up position.

I had a feeling both the headlight seating and the setting of the headlight motor linkage was off.
BEFORE YOU START, MAKE SURE THERE ARE 'E' OR 'C' CLIPS ON YOUR HEADLIGHT LINKAGE ARMS.
As seen in the second pic, there are 'E' clips used. I like 'C' clips, but the bottom clip is hard to get a 'C' clip on
First, you can re-seat the headlight assembly. In the first pic you will see two bolts at the end of the torsion bar - this is your east-west adjustment. If you look under the fender lip by following a straight line from the torsion bar, you will see a bolt (8mm I think). This is you north-south adjuster for where/how the headlight will sit. Adjust this while headlight is down.
Second, once the assembly is properly seated, disconnect/remove the linkage from the motor shaft. Turn headlight on to position 2 (fully ON) and the headlight motor will move to the complete upright position. Now lift the headlights to the upright position and replace/secure the linkage to the motor. Be sure to both place the clips on.
On your MY the motor moves 180 degrees not full circle. This may take a little fine tuning to get the seating and the headlight excursion just right but this is the way.
Take your car to a 928 guy next time. A 928 guy wouldn't leave your headlight like this. Though I wouldn't bet the farm, I'll wager the clips weren't replaced. These are CRUCIAL for if the linkage were to un-attach you would be buying a new radiator as it would get punctured. As a habit occasionally check on the status of these clips.

Also, if you are going to do it yourself and have a helper turn the lights on & off for you, watch your fingers near the headlight motor linkage.

I think the key thing is to get in there and take a good look at what is happening - it may be obvious - but at least you will be able to post some pictures to get better opinions.

Most body shops would have removed the lamp & maybe the yoke to paint the fenders - I see no reason to mess with the linkage unless it was a collision repair...

I think I've got the same problem -- 1985, lights come up, motor linkage is at maximum extension, but they drop back about half an inch and I can't adjust it out.

When they drop back, the bar connecting the motor to the lights doesn't move. The adjustment bolts are all tight, and the bars going past the adjustment into the fender doesn't move -- all movement is at the light assembly.

I did take the front wheel off, and looked from the bottom -- I'm guessing there's a spring or something missing. My car also had some body work done on the front by the PO. They did a great job, but I think they may not have reassembled with all the parts.

I'll get some pics this weekend to hopefully illustrate it better.

Thanks!

Ed

Thought I'd add this for clarity -- I noted the part that drops back.
