$15K seems too low. There were some around a bit older asking for more.
I agree that $18K would still be excellent price, if we think most items are fine. The A/C, while bothersome, might not be too bad to fix.
Maybe could ask more.
Just using some comparison to other recent cars here.
Good luck, if I was in the market, this would be a good one.

At $15k it would be sold in a day or two (you've probably already had PM's saying "I'll take it" at $15k).

89GT is unusual, and pretty much the pick of the S4 body style. Its closer to the "clubsport" than any other model available in the USA, with the same gearbox and cams, short shifter and mechanical LSD.

Its black/black, which is desirable to lots. If it passes smog, is polished up and has all the original bits, it could probably fetch $22k, and with working AC, as high as $24-25k, although it might take a little while to sell.

Oh, it's worse than that. It all started when the new Ibis Ripley frame came out two weeks ago. I'm putting together a mountain bike that's just shy of ten grand.

Rob Edward's could not bring $22k here or on Ebay for his 90,
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/GT-/1...orcev4exp=true

I just sold my 89 and it was listed for 4 months (was winter) and I had 4 calls on it and the one guy who looked at it in person bought it.

The economy is slowing down and most people are deathly afraid of anything that could have a big repair bill.

News from last week "The number of working-age Americans counted as part of the labor force -- either with a job or looking for one -- tumbled by 496,000 in March, the biggest fall since December 2009, the Labor Department said on Friday. That pushed the so-called workforce participation rate to a 34-year low of 63.3 percent."

$15k-17K is my estimate. I would Ebay it starting at $15k with no reserve and hope for a bidding war.

Robs car was one of the data points I considered when coming up with the numbers above.

If Rob was to offer his up for sale at 25k asking, I'd be surprised if it didn't sell for close to that figure.

Ebay tends to attract lower valuations due to the nature of an auction. A serious buyer would want a PPI, and to talk about the car, its history, and see the receipts/certificates etc.

Was your 89 an auto? Auto would devalue the car a lot (no offense to auto lovers - that just seems the way of the market. you could buy 2 auto GTS' for the cost of a single 5-speed).

Yes it was an auto with new tbelt, Pkensioner, ac working, needed motor mounts & tires. 147kms sold it for $10k.

People can ask what ever they want and it only takes one buyer but with the economy + Obama care bill due the odds for top dollar are not good.

Actually mine did sell at asking ($22K), shortly after the Ebay ad ended. It had a Greg Brown PPI , gave the buyer a copy of my maintenance spreadsheet and a pdf of all the receipts and records, and spent some time with the buyer answering all his questions. I had also spent a bunch of time making the car as close to perfect as I could before the PPI.

Bottom line, I made the car as nice as I could, and got the asking price within 2 weeks of putting it up for sale.

A/C doesn't blow cold air. Cracks in the pod/dash. A bit of wear on the driver's seat bolster. Several paint blemishes in the hood. Front wheels worn on the outside from diving before the alignment.
I agree with Hilton that Gregg's car should be worth at least $22-23K if these needs are attended to. The A/C needs to work, period- on a hot day with no A/C, a (black) luxury GT car, isn't. As long as the bolster isn't cracked through, a Leatherworld repair and/or recoloring kit (http://www.leatherworldtech.com/Prod...Kit__DLRK.aspx) is a cheap and effective solution. The dash and pod cracks are a problem IMO for getting maximal resale, but for the time and money it would cost to replace with a good one, you probably wouldn't recoup the cost and effort.

If we expect prospective 928 owners to value the marque and for prices to increase, that's only going to happen if sellers put their best foot forward in making their cars as no-excuses as they can be.

I'm grateful for the helpful replies.

Rob, thanks for the advice. I'll be spending some time getting this car into cleaner condition.

I am the kind who spends time doing the mechanical stuff. For example, after much examining, I have determined what the rear hatch leak on the 928 is caused by. And I've cured it. The seal up at the hinges gets hung up due to friction upon closing, and doesn't seat right. Using liberal silicone all over the area, and getting in the car to ensure that the seal seats properly will keep the rear hatch sealed to the elements. I should have posted this in a separate thread when I discovered it.

Alright, back to work I go.
