Here are some pictures of the new exhaust. The pipes are 2.5" merged into a single 3" after the cats through a Y-pipe. The mufflers are the OBX ones as state above (one is actually a glasspack type).

The sound is very smooth at idle and quieter than the Flowmaster 10s that were on there before. At WOT, there is a very unique sound to it. It is loud when you get on it, but not as loud as before again. It's very smooth sounding....classy actually, but still gives you that grin.

Enjoy the pics.

Does anyone have any recommendations on what type of paint I could use to cover the welds in order to prevent rust? I was thinking something like the chrome duplicolor I saw on the shelf at Napa. However, I doubt it would hold up to heat. Then again, I am only using it on the exhaust tip weld to the muffler.

Dunno the reason, but I've read that many glasspack type straight through mufflers don't flow as well as a good two chamber.

Maybe try some exhaust or caliper paint?

I read something about that too a while back. As far as gains or losses go, there is no 'different feel' to the car when accelerating. No performance improvement, and if there was it would be probably so small it won't even be felt. I do like the idea of a lightweight exhaust system though.

Sounds fast is almost as much fun as is fast with fewer tickets.

Believe me, it sounded fast before, now it just sounds pleasant.

Is there benefit to running an x pipe in addition to the required y pipe in this case?

Looks to me that this set up could work on s3's and older cars.
Althought the end tip would have to be modified, and come out as more of an angle.
No rear bumper cut out on older cars.
I know alot of guys run a borla system on 84 and older-
This seems like it could be a fraction of the cost.

I was never happy with the sound of my 85 with x-pipe and no cats,
Stock resonator and pumpkin muffler.

Anyone know the outlet tube dimensions of the standard x-pipe that rodger sells?! For the small y piece?

What is the difference between a resonator and a muffler?

The x into y after cats is debatable. I have always thought that this would be too much scavenging. While there is no felt power loss, I believe it will be better later to delete the x-pipe. I am concerned about running a single O2 sensor on only one engine bank out of fear that there is no real combined determination of the air-fuel ratio from both banks.

There are x-pipes out there that run on one bank only but I have never really asked about how the car runs.

PC, a resonator is pretty much a glass pack with a perforated exhaust tube and any type of fiberglass or steel packing encased in a bullet type shell around the tube.

On a side note, certain people on Mercedes forums running x into y setups on CLK55s have said this setup really quiets down the exhaust.

I can attest to the same results on a 928.

Andy nice exhaust work and S4, it looks very well cared for.

tape/mask off the exhaust leaving the welds exposed and spray with silver heat paint.

I like the tip but wonder if a round would be better, it looks very close to your paint.

The exhaust looks great, now get us some video!

Thanks! I wish I took another pic to show how the tip sits away from the bumper. My old RMB tips actually touched and burned the left side of the exhaust cutout on the bumper.

This new setup keeps the tip at a more reasonable distance despite its size and does not stick out any further than the old ones. Total diameter of this one is 3.5" x 6". Old RMB tips were 6" side by side.

Nice looking job. My 79 was modified by the previous owner with one of the silencers ? removed and is fairly loud when you get on it. Remarkably quiet when the windows are up though When the time comes to replace the system I want it quiet. -plus I will not have that silly looking two outlet tip.
But then I'm the kind of guy who would put extra silent mufflers on a Harley.
