There are lots of great roads in the area without having to go all the way to the Dragon. One is 80 South towards Marion. You can pick it up from the Blue Ridge Parkway. It's full of downhill switchbacks and twisties. (If you like to play golf, Mt. Mitchell Golf Course is just north of the Parkway on 80 and is one of the best in western NC, stop there first). Continuing on 80 South and before you get to US 70, turn onto Toms Creek Rd and head towards 221 N. Take it north and then at the intersection of 226, take it, and then take 226A climbing the mountain to Little Switzerland. The parkway is right there and you're back near where you started, maybe.
If you are going towards Asheville from the north, or coming through Asheville from the south or west, the Elk Mountain Scenic Highway is a great ride, connecting north Asheville and the Parkway again. Spectacular ride and lots of exposure, if you like that. I was on this a few weeks ago with several Lotus Elise, Exige, Evora, a couple Elans, and a Ferrari F40. Some passengers came away a little nervous.
There are also good places north past Blowing Rock and Deep Gap, not many people or traffic up there, but full of mountain roads.
All these are on Google Maps, check them out in more detail.

Just cancelled my room so there is one open if anyone needs one. I was doing some last minute prep and noticed I have a completely torn CV boot on the right side. Car was driving fine and there is still grease visible. So needless to say, I won't be driving up from Charlotte, NC in my 89 S4. Maybe I will fly the helicopter up for the day. looks like there is a spot to land at the Best Western. I drove last year for the first time and loved it.
