Wolfsburg edition VW Rabbit GTI's used those also, just uses air flow to press the wiper to the windshield at high speeds in the rain., then they invented RAINX.

Dean, I am pretty sure your metal one is factory. As OTR18WHEELER said some early VW has factory fitted metal arm spoiler as well. I believe ever since Bosch came up with the spoiler integrated wiper, the arm spoiler was no long used.

Only the back requires modification - fronts fit directly.
reused the side pin from the old rear wiper, opened up the hole one side, filled the middle with a section of polycarbonate wrapped in black vinyl.
This wiper is quite a bit longer than stock - cleans the whole rear windshield vertically.

If you use the Bosch ICONs they have a mini low profile spoiler all along the blade length - this looks smooth - it can be a lower profile because its longer and there are no open areas to create lift and it exerts downforce all along the blade.
I like the ICONs - both how they perform and how they look - its not stock - but you don't really notice it either - just blends in. I won't be going back.
