Default How many 928 owners on this forum also own 911's?

After reading a rather long winded thread about what schmucks 911 owners can be I was curious how many of you guys also own 911's. I think that thread proved we all can be schmucks at times and like to toot our own horns. So now I have my long winded thread I hope I get some serious and honest replies.

I would appreciate it if you guys don't turn this into a pissing match since I appreciate both equally but in a different way. I have owned 911's, 914's, 944's, 928's and even Cayenne's along with the occasional BMW, MB and Audi for over 30 years and have heard the same crap about mine is better bigger or whatever. The fact is both are great cars and offer different experiences. One is not superior to the other and both have attributes and shortcomings that cannot be denied. Unfortunately any of these older cars are woefully outdated by today's standards but offer an experience that the newer cars do not. Even the new 911 is IMO a compromise between the old air cooled and the 928 although I am looking forward to driving my friends new 991 GT3 when it arrives.

I drive what I drive for me because I feel these cars offered some of the best engineering and driving experience from a day long before electronic aids and computer design engineering. The work that went into designing and building these marvels is unparalleled and IMO cannot be duplicated in today's industry.

Pictures of both would be appreciated and feel free to comment on the pros and cons of each but in a constructive way.

My pros and cons are simple:

1993 964 C2 is a super fun car. Very involving completely different than the turbo although at the same time remarkably similar. It is not as easy to drive properly as one would think but when in control it has capabilities far exceeding the sum of its parts. A car that rewards you for being a good driver and punishes when you think you are better than you are. A bit heavy could use to loose some weight especially when compared to my SC's and earlier long nose 911's but feels light compared to the 928 when driving. With nearly 300 hp it is underpowered but enough to do its job and can out-drive some far more powerful cars, more than enough to get you into deep **** if you aren't careful. A very agile and quick car, perfect for tight back roads and fast spirited drives.

The 94 turbo 3.6 is unlike anything else I have driven and I have driven a lot. A bear to drive fast but when done properly nothing is equal to its experience or fun factor and I am comparing this to cars like an F40. A widow maker for those who don't have the ***** or skills to pull it off. A car that makes you scream holly **** with a huge smile on your face and makes you hunger for more. It isn't about the HP, torque or speed but the way it delivers it. This car is best suited for fast straights and long twisties. One of the worst cars to get stuck in traffic in although the attention is a bit unsettling at times. Unlike low pressure turbos of today the last of the single turbo rear wheel drive 911's is pure adrenalin and is an outstanding ride.

The 1993 Gen II 928 GTS is a masterpiece of design although it is a luxury GT car in comparison to the 911's. Everything initially feels slow and heavy compared to the 911's but don't be deceived by first impressions. It is anything but slow, heavy at 3505 pounds my GTS could use to go on a diet. Nearly 400 pounds heavier than the turbo you feel it immediately. What amazes me about the 928 with all 928's (I have owned more than one including OB's) is how well everything works in harmony as it was designed to and there is a lot to be said for that. Nearly perfect from day one its biggest problem was lack of room for improvement made it tough to draw owners coming back for more. I never tire of driving the 928 it is a car that just sucks you in and makes you want to stay. When you first climb into a 928 with your legs extended forward you feel relaxed unlike the hyper feeling of the 911's. Although relaxed when you are out for a casual drive all it takes is the press of the pedal to the floor and suddenly it is as though the car is transformed into this monster. It is amazing that they were able to engineer the best of a luxury car and a sports car into one. The 928 is the perfect long trip cruiser or back road burner all wrapped up into one. Kind of a Jeckyll and Hyde of autos. It is also one of the easiest 5 speeds to drive in traffic of any manual i have driven. An exceptional and under appreciated car.

I track my C2 exclusively now and I have driven with some of you and you know what I mean that except for a small handful, these cars are all far more capable than we are.

So now that I have spewed all this crap onto your screen, lets see a show of hands how many of you guys have owned or do own one or more of each? Pictures please.

Have both (928 for 15 years & 996 TT for 3 years) and they are great cars. Each different in its own way and that's what makes them great.

996TT is the daily driver, and the 928S4 is the weekend car.

I have 1999 996 C2 for 10 years and have several 928 over the years . I love working on 928's and getting them sorted out . I feel 928 at speed is much more stable and comfortable. But 911 is lighter more all out sport feel. I have never driven a stroker 928 and mostof the ones I have owned have been pretty much stock so I am sure theres room for improvement on 30 year old cars.

Never really had the desire for a 911....but lately a few have me intrigued... Your survey should include other options .. cause a 911...isn't the same as a 911...or a 911.. (e.g 930, 993, 996, 964, 997.1, 997.2 etc)...

I wouldn't consider a base 964, 993, 996 or 997.. but a 997GT3..or 996 GT2 are definite maybes.. 993 TT.. absolutely... 991TT or the new 991GT3..for sure (but won't happen in my life time LOL).

I started with a 911 (993) 11 years ago and purchased a 928 last year - very different cars but both great in their own ways. I always swore I would never own a Porsche with an automatic, but that transmission really suits the 928. It's great having both in the garage to suit the mood.

Your Turbo is absolutely gorgeous. I hope to have a 911 turbo one day.

Why didn't you make this a public poll so we know who to make fun of?

Truth be told, I'll own a 911 someday. Lorelei found a turquoise C4 Targa she really liked. It was so ugly....... I was tempted to buy it.

Your 3.6 is my absolute favorite 911 of all time. But if I ever spend that kind of coin on a single car, I doubt it will be a Porsche.

I have one of each - and they're both '87's, black and 5-speeds.

This is great, the responses are far different than I expected.

I tried to keep it simple I started trying to add all the different 911 versions but that would have been far too many choices. I purposely did not make it a public poll but it would have been interesting to see. I think I will get more honest responses this way.

The 911's are all quite different in feel and drive unlike the 928 which are more similar than different over the MY range. Each person has their preferences. I enjoy the new 991/997 variant but to me a 911 should be air-cooled and with the way the market is going it would seem more and more people are discovering the virtues of the older cars.

What about some pictures and thanks for the compliments. I am lucky to have acquired the cars i have at the right time. I am not so sure I could afford them today their values seem to be on a steady rise.

Started with a 911 years ago, sold it and bought my 928 in 1995. New 911 in 2007.

I feel blessed to have both of these very different cars. Nice stable you have there cobalt!

I sold this 83 SC to get my 84 928S Euro. I wish I could have kept it. Both great cars, but the 928 of the same vintage is so much more car - technology, comfort, power. The more basic, raw feel of the 911SC certainly has it's place, and driving it was a blast. Having the choice as to which to drive, depending on my mood, would have been great. The two together make good bookends.

Does an old Beetle count? They do share like 97% of their parts with a 993.

I have both a 79 911SC and an 84 928S. I enjoy driving both and I wouldn't mind having more examples of each plus all the other cars I've wanted since my brain became car aware. Unfortunately, cold hard cash is the limiting factor.
