Peter,
I know of several people running 275/40R17 tyres on a 9" rim. I do it on my cup 1's without an issue. I have even fitted chains to the vehicle a couple of times so that shows that there is plenty of clearance. ('90 S4)
I myself run a 235/45R17 on the front as they are much easier to get here (NZ) and cheaper as well. This solves the ABS issues and brings the digital speedo up to 3% over (103kph indicated is 100kph actual).

Thanks Mark and Marc. The tires are mounted on the wheels and look fine. I haven't had a chance to put them on the car yet. I should get the car back today from an intake refresh and will put the new wheels on this weekend.

What tires are you running now Sniper? What offset are the wheels? On an 11" wheel with 42mm offset and a 295 I needed to roll the fenders. With a 10" with 65mm offset and 285, but I have a 25mm spacer, on a 993 twist wheel I need no rolling.

What about 10 X 19 ET 61 wheels on the rear? Can I mount 295/30 19 these on my S4 without rolling?

Same question I have for my S4...right now running 285/30 R19 x 10 (10 x 19) etc...with zero run but it is very very close when I put my finger under it. But mine is also lowered 1" or so...but no rubbing...
I will buy some 295's tomorrow and put them on, if they rub then I will go back to 285...will update after I test...

Hinchcliffe, brother I am running Pilot Sport 2's currently all around...amazing traction...!
Offset....um no clue, no spacer though and it is lowered 1" or a bit more from stock...actually for me it handles better lowered (maybe its a placebo) but I feel less roll...

Sometimes the actual tire size isn't accurately reflected by the standard numbering. I had been running 285/30/18's on my racer, I had a little more room for tire width. I bought 295/30/18's and was surprised to find the 295 was in fact bigger diameter but not wider in the case of the Hoosier R6.

Tire Rack has great data on what the actual dimensions and allowable rim sizes are, look up the specific tire and manufacturer to know you have the right data.

I put the new wheels and tires on this weekend (235/40/18 fr 295/30/18 rear). The back tires fit with at least an inch of clearence between the tire and fender. I probably could have got away with a wider rear wheel. No rubbing at all.
What surprised me is the way the wheels and tires transformed the car. The car feels much more nimble and sporty. The difference from my previous setup is night and day. I drove over some rough roads and nothing seemed harsh or jarring. I was expecting some compromise in ride quality but it seems to be the same.
