Default Home again (with a question)!

Hi,

After a looooong time at the shop, my baby is home again!
Just put about 300km on it, everything seems ok, it drives fine, and it sounds fantastic!
What was done:
Complete new clutch with new master and slave, blue hose, fuel lines, motor mounts, gearbox repair with new sincro rings, new coolant tank and level sender, new fuel level sender, new oil pressure sender, replacement of some leaking oil lines, new windscreen washer filler neck, front and rear brake discs, new hatch lock upper and lower parts, and a lot more of small stuff and, of course, the usual oil and filter change (Mobil 1 15W50), fuel filter change, coolant and brake fluid, etc.

Now, a question, about the only thing that is not perfect.
With the car idling, no gear engaged and the clutch not depressed there is a “metallic” noise, like something is out of place or needs to be adjusted. If a press the clutch the noise disappears completely!
Otherwise, when running, the gearbox seems fine, easy gear changes up and down with no grinding in any gear, all ok.

Thanks in advance for your help

Regards

Did they replace the throwout bearing?

...

Could be a throwout bearing but my thought is the clutch is fine and the torque tube may be on the way out. Particularly if the noise sort of "winds down" after the clutch is depressed.

The torque tube is supported in its housing by three big rubber doughnuts with bearings for the shaft.

When idling in neutral with the clutch pedal not depressed the torque tube is rotating. When the clutch is depressed, the torque tube stops turning and a gear may be engaged.

There's a lot info here on torque tubes and their care a rebuilding. It's sub-optimal but, IIRC, the torque tube can generally make noise for looong time (years) before becoming non-functional.

Here's a thread with lots of pix and discussion:

P.S. The exact nature and behavior of the noise is crucial to the diagnosis, especially the "winds down" part, if it does that.

Could be that too....but if it wasn't doing it before, and it's doing it now, and the TT wasn't touched.......

Yep. If it were me, I'd prefer it to be some guaranteed part of the job just done, too. Does sound like the TT got touched at least a little, though.

Thanks for your answers and help,
The clutch job included a rebuilt release bearing from Roger.
I just talk to my mechanic about the possibilities of where the noise is coming from, and next week with the car idling and the noise "on" he will put the car on the lift and try to identify it.
I hope it's just clutch adjustement, I know it could be difficult to get it absolutely right the first time.
Thanks agion.

Regards
