Default PorKen Chip

Today was the first day I was able to take out the 928s (1986) and test the chips I put in as well as the fuel regulator (thanks Roger). Only one word....Awesome!!
Amazing power. So glad I did this. Rick

Can you explain a little about the fuel pressure regulator.
Is it adjustable, or does it come pre-set?
How do you adjust it if necessary?
Do you hook up a fuel pressure gauge to the rail?
What is the stock pressure on an 85/86?
What do you increase it to for the chips?

Well, your asking some very good questions. I don't think that it can be adjusted. At least I didn't see how it could be adjusted. I think that it just pushes more fuel through it ... more than the stock one.
Roger - little help please?

It is a later model (87 IIRC) regulator that works with the parameters of the chip.
Info is at liftbars.com or many of the threads on here about installing Ken's chips.

In short, the '85/'86 use 24 # injections w/ lower fuel pressure approximately 38 lbs, the S4's have 17 # w/higher pressure, approximately 48 lbs.

So using the S4 FPR allows more fuel to flow which is required for the advanced ECU programming of Ken's chips.
And more fuel properly burned equals more power

The '87 FPR is pre-set to 55psi of pressure.

The '87 is recommended because the connections match up and you can just swap out your old for new, I think the '88 and up is the same pressure, but different size threads or whatever.

The chip is designed to go with this 'plug-and-play' increase in pressure but it's also the reason the website specifically states that you should replace all fuel lines.

If your old lines were holding up well against the stock pressure you were already on borrowed time because of the age of them. Increase the inside pressure without replacing them and you're asking for a fire.

I hope you replaced all of the rubber lines in the engine bay as well!

Yes a chip for the S4 would be cool. Is there a reason why there isn't one?

There will be but you have to be patient. The S3 chips took years to perfect.

Sharkbate,

Welcome to the Porkenized Shark Club! I have every little S3 do-dad Ken designed on my 86.5 / 5 Speed... I've noticed in some "for sale" listing that cars WITHOUT performance chips are considered "unmolested". I say BS... The performance improvement with Ken's chips is best described as "seat of the pants pure joy"!!! The engine just keeps PULLING all the way to redline in EVERY gear and it does it SAFELY... well within the engine & drivetrain's ability to do so You are gonna LOVE it!!!
