Win8 does not have the win XP compatibility mode or win XP emulator that win 7 had. I have not been able to run it under win 8 - I just keep it on a separate XP laptop in the shop area.

Interesting. I have three versions of PET, 6.x, 7.1 and 7.2. None of the will run on my 64 bit laptop I bought over a year ago. They run fine on 32 bit computers with Win 7. My service manuals (996) run fine on the 64bit machine.

I have a Dell XPS L720X running Win 7 64 bit, I had to use Windows virtual PC / XP emulator, works fine for PET 7.3.

How much longer are they going to continue to make beige WinTel boxes for Luddites like me and my old cars?

I run 7.3 update 312/57 (so fully updated).... it runs on a Win7/32 virtual machine. Can't get it to work on a win7/64 machine. The hardlock drivers are not working on 64 bits o/s. I would expect it to run on a win8/32 machine but have never tried.

So if you would run VmPlayer on your Win8 machine, and install a Xp image or win7/32 image with PET7.3 you'd be fine !!

I am fighting with getting 7.3 to run for weeks now. Installed fine under a plain old XP Pro virtual machine on a Windows 7 x64 host, but I keep getting a hardlock error Not sure what I am doing wrong. Any ideas?

Also, either VirtualBox, VMWare or VirtualPC should accomplish the same on Windows 8 as long as the guest is a plain old Win XP 32bit install.

"I run Pet 7 windows 8 64 bit no issues "..... what PET version? 7.0 works on a 64bit machine, 7.1 works but failed to update. Both 7.0 and 7.1 stopped updating some time ago. The new PET 7.3 does not work on 64 bits, only on 32bits.
It works on a 32bit platform and if you know how to update it updates

Installing 7.3 on a win7/32 virtual machine was pretty straight forward. The updates were a bitch.

Anyone have any pointers why I could still be getting the hardlock error, even though I am trying to run it in a 32bit XP Pro VM? Installed PET then a supposedly under this configuration working Hardlock driver...no dice though.

TIA,

Malcolm,

First download the VWware player (it's free) at:

http://www.vmware.com/products/player/

Then create a new XP virtual machine (VM) 32 bits

Last, install PET 7.3

Where is everyone finding Pet 7.3? My old xp pro 32 box is about to get a format and clean install and I was just looking at that Hardlock program and wondering if it should be deleted (had no idea what it did). My old Pet 7 install died ugly during an update months ago.

I don't think it is wise or correct to direct you to PET 7.3 install, but google is your best friend here.

One tip for those using or opting for the VmWare player solution: start the player with the virtual machine, start PET, and leave it in suspended state. Then make a shortcut like this:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware Workstation\vmplayer.exe" "d:\win7_32\windows 7.vmx" -u

It starts PET as an application in Unity presentation, which integrates seamless in Win8/64.

Let me know if you have questions.
