5 speed tansmission oil GM 12345349
Just spoke to a a friend of mine out in Torrance CA.
he advised me of an oil that may work well in the 928 5 speed transmission.
His experimental car is a RS200 Ford Escort a rally car.
he had used many different oils to get this trans to shift well nothing worked.
After swapping in this GM oil PN 12345349 he said his trans now shifts like butter.
I thought it Might be worth a shot for any that have hard shifting transmissions.

T I dont know,
I was passing this info along,
My friend learned of this from a mechanic that is on a race car team he is friends with.
BTW my friend in Torrance is a caretaker/mechanic for many hi dollar cars,
so I can vouch for his info and his results

I wonder if this would be compatable with conventional gear oil so that it could be used as a partial additive. I have trouble with second gear when cold so I have been looking for something to smooth it up a little. I usually just skip second gear for the first few minutes of driving.

Here's my thread on Pelican. Owner's Manual for 78 and 79 states Dexron can be substituted in the 5 spd when 75W90 is not available. Dexron III (which is what was around in 78 & 79) is no longer being produced. Dexron IV is backward compatible in automatic transmissions but not in manual transmissions or transfer cases that called for Dexron III. The GM Manual Transmission Fluid oil is essentially the old Dexron III.
I've had it in my 79 for over a year, made a world of difference.

I have about 1/2 Dexron and 1/2 conv 75/90 g.o. in my 5-spd and it shifts much better.
A friend of mine who's retired and worked for Dana, said dexron was used in the rears of Chryslers and other big American cars and it would offer protection the way i used it. I had synthetic 75/90 in there previously and it didn't shift as well with the dexron and conventional 75/90.
Not worried about it damaging anything.

For 37 years I've used Havoline 80-90 wt gear oil, with 2 cans of STP in the ZF transaxel of the Pantera. Never a problem. Could prolly buy 6 928 5 speeds for what a Dash II ZF cost. The ZF is the most expensive part of a Pantera, and also it's weakest link.

It's interesting that this should come up as my plans for the weekend include changing the trans fluid along with installing new rear coupler bushings and a short shifter. I really don't have any complaints about the way my car shifts, yes I miss a gear now and then but that's me, not the car. I think I'll try this and report back. As long as it won't do any damage I don't see the harm, if I don't like it I'll change it out for Redline. As my car has an LSD anyone see any issues using the STP modifier with this product?

OK, I did a quick search and from what I can tell GM PN 12345349 is no longer being produced by the original manufacturer for GM and the GM replacement fluid would not be suitable for our cars. (Don't ask me to quote sources, I'm doing this on my phone:/) Anyway, if you go here http://www.stealth316.com/2-pennzoil-synchromesh.htm according to this gentleman Pennzoil is making the 12345349 under license from GM. This appears to be a suitable replacement. Lastly, I have read the post on Pelican from RJM65 but have not yet compared the product he used with success to the 12345349 product. Hopefully someone here with more knowledge than me will help resolve this.

When I switched over to the GM Manual Transmission Fluid p/n 88861800 it made a huge difference, especially in downshifting. Again, 88861800 is what GM put out to use in manual trans that originally called for DEXRON III. I've put close to 10,000 miles on mine since the fluid change and have been extremely happy with it. I felt comfortable using it because it clearly states in the manual that DEXRON is ok to use in MY 78/79. As Thom says, maybe someone more knowledgeable can point out other options for newer cars.
I also wanted to clarify, the synchomesh oil mentioned in the original post is different than what I used. I called the oil I used synchromesh in my previous post and that was in error, will fix that right now.

RJM,
I did some poking around the web today and from what I can tell what you've used is correct for our application. I'm going to give it a try this weekend if I can resolve whether it's compatible with an LSD modifier, or whether I need a modifier at all.
