Default Chain Tensioner differences between model years

Are the 85-86 lower tensions assemblies interchangeable the 87 and up version?

Does anybody have pictures of what a new lower pad assembly looks like? I would like to compare them to mine.

Thanks

And for comparison, here are some pics of an S4 chain pad tensioner.

My memory dug up a reference to this in another thread from ages ago:

https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...posterity.html

per that, 86.5 get the S4-style tensioners. Before that were the ones with the spring inside like I show above.

edit:

just checked, and the complete tensioners are $230 per side. 92810502708 and 92810502808. Looking at the picture for '86's, that part number includes the oil pipe, banjo bolts and sealing rings as well as the tensioner itself - so sounds like an upgrade kit.

PET shows the same part numbers for 85-95, so it seems the only way forward for most 85/86 owners is to upgrade to the later style. If you already have some of the later ones, you still need the correct oil pipe, banjo bolts, and some new pads for them.

and lastly, JHowell's done the swap:

That makes sense because I disassembled one 86 and on 86.5 engine a few years ago. I just don't have a recollection of one I pictured in another thread with a white pad.
