Update: Oil Analysis Received - NY Texas road trip - bad start.
Running like a top for 276 miles then the engine cut out.
Coasted onto the shoulder of I81 a couple miles north of Martinsburg VA.
Waiting on AAA with my son.
She made the exact burbling sound you get when you're driving and you switch off the key.
Here we go....

West Va. AAA is having big trouble figuring out the tow.
Yes fuel pump is fine. Runs and did not start even jumpered. I can hear it run.
I am worried its ignition.

"Toad" to a mechanic a few miles south on highway 9 from Martinsburg WVA. Holed up in a comfort inn with six pack and beef jerky and the boob tube (son refuses to watch olympics-Fred movie on).
Waiting to talk to mechanic in morning.
Things I'm thinking about:
Timing belt is on and seems fine - if not, I'm screwed, it is interference with euro s heads and cams!
Fuel pressure seems fine. Pump runs. A/f gauge showed no problems at 14.7:1 at 70mph.
Distributor is bolted down tight
Coil wires on. Resistors connection secure.
Engine ground strap attached tightly
Spark plug wires in tack
Battery new (2 months old), but did struggle to spin the engine when I tried to restart her (bad cells?).
Voltmeter always 12+ all morning. But did sink to 12 with a/c on.
She tried to start before the toe arrived. But super rough. Shaking.
Since it did try to start, maybe the electronic ignition is not toast?
But the roughness makes me worried about the timing belt jumping (although I think this is paranoia. Portensioner btw.
Coil gave out? Distibutor arcing like crazy?
But it just gave out suddenly.
But after 10 miles of mild surging
Fingers crossed.

We've seen the later cars die due to battery ground strap corrosion.
I've had luck replacing with a generic round one from advance auto.
Another thought is broken wires at the solder points inside 14pin.
Battery is easy enough to get checked out.

If the battery were not connected you would not have been able to test the fuel pump... Well, it would not have been running when you jumpered it anyway...

Draw thru that ground is different depending on what and how much is connected at same time.
And its an inherently unstable connection when it happens, esp. if wet.
Wonky fp relay is possible.
And wonky fuse 22 for same.
I know nothing about CIS nor early ignition. Electronic? Green wire on these? Or did that come later with L-Jetronic?
Bad fuel regulator or damper?

Green wire is only a couple years old and I checked it - good shape.
Transistorized ignition, but I hope it is something else. (be carefule what you wish for)
Maybe I'll get off easy with a bad coil - its maybe 10-15 years old
