Default replacement foam seals

Has anyone found an alternative to using the factory foam seals for the front inner fender splash shields and the front fender support?

Yes, regular weather strips to be found at a home department store. I found some weather strips which expand after applying so that it completely seals the gaps. Measurements are about half an inch wide and at least one inch high.

Yes ... I found a range of neoprene sections with self adhesive backing at an industrial rubber/foam outlet here. You should find a similar range somewhere over there.

Neoprene is the best material for all the underbody sealing strip applications on a 928. It resists extreme conditions and is closed cell so doesn't soak up water and dirt.

I used foam rope from the insulation dept. at Home Depot:

The other things in this picture were to patch the splash shields.

I used closed-cell neoprene foam tube (pipe insulation from our local Home Depot equivalent - Bunnings).

I bought a few bits like that from Clarke Rubber Dave, but didn't like the compressibility (or lack thereof) on those items.

I used 3/4" closed cell foam weatherstrip over 3/4" foam backer rod from HD.

That foam tube is a superior solution though. Haven't seen that style here.

I didn't have any trouble with the neoprene sections I got, which is used for the fuel tank cradle strips and splash shield seals on my 82, but I can see that the foam pipe insulation would be much better on the grooved edges of the splash shields because it's so compliant.

About to do a few seals on the GTS, so think I'll use the pipe insulation (which I already have boxes of) in a few locations instead of the strips I showed ... thanks Hilton. Edit: ... and Jon

The pipe insulation does look good on there but my ignorant mind must inquire; where does that part go?

What is the outside diameter of the foam tubing?

I used two lengths of black adhesive weatherstrip foam and stuck them together (sticky side to sticky side) to get the correct thickness to fit snug in the splash shield channel. I forget the width of the foam strips, but you want it wide enough to protrude from the channel against the fender wall to
get a good seal. I used a heated box cutter blade to do final trim.

I thought about pipe insulation too, afterward. Maybe that would work better. I will try that next time.

I'll have to go check what I've got in the garage.

I've found a few uses for the neoprene tube:
  1. Fuel rail insulation for S4 fuel rails - its oil resistant, and being neoprene, you can "weld" it with superglue, so I just slit it, make cutouts for the injectors/mounts, and then weld it shut on the bottom side. (size:9x20)
  2. Fuel cooler insulation - there's a large size which can *just* be slid over the fuel cooler in one piece to replace the hard crumbly original insulation (size: 9x25)
  3. Edge seal of splash shields - per this thread (size: 9x12)
  4. Insulation for the small AC hose by the firewall (size: 9x20)

Of course, each use requires a different size.. I'll check what I have, the sizes are specified as ID x Wall thickness. I'll update this thread later on.

Some quick digging, and it looks like its sold in the USA under the product names "Solaflex" and "Armaflex" - made by Armacell. Careful you don't get the thicker-walled stuff by accident - I've got some with 1/2" walls (12x10) which I tried to use for splash shields and it didn't compress enough.

(The fuel pressure gauge was there for diagnostic purposes - I don't drive around with it fitted)
