Default Rebuilt 1R Heads For Sale

I got these heads as part of my last project purchase but they need to go to a new home. The previous owner had the heads completely rebuilt but didn't pick them up when the bill went from an estimate in the 400's to over $700. I purchased them from the machine shop and they told me what work had been done. From what I remember, it was 3 angle grind, new seals/guides?, and leak tested. Maybe more that I'm forgetting. The machine shop, here in Houston, has been around along time and the previous owner selected them because he said they had done a lot of Porsche work. I can provide the name of the shop and you can call and see if they remember and details about this job.

The heads are from an 88 with about 90k miles (the white car that Herman just bought from me). I don't know why the heads were rebuilt since the engine had a stuck piston, not bent valves. It could be that there was coolant in the cylinder that caused the piston to corrode, so the previous owner wanted to make sure the surface was good.

These heads are AS IS, $900 plus actual shipping cost.

Cam caps and bolts also included but not shown in picture.

Cams also available separately.

(I have many other parts I'm about to post in another thread, but wanted to post the heads separately. Also have 2R heads that are still on a thrust bearing engine that I will sell soon)

Are these a drop-in replacement for the S3 Heads? I have 2 sets of those and am about to find a shop to rebuild a pair. I know these are bolted in rather than having studs, but I'm curious if these might be a faster path to putting the motor together. Thanks in advance.

Good question, not sure. I think the valves are bigger on S4's, so may be a mismatch with the shape of the top of an S3 piston.

What heads does my 1990 S4 have? I might consider these if they fit.

I think your 90 S4 should have 2R heads. They were improved slightly over the 1R heads with thicker journals whatever that means. These might work though, not sure.

I also have a set of 2R heads but they are still mounted to a thrust bearing failure engine, so they would need to be removed, and the buyer would want to have a machine shop disassemble and clean since there was probably some aluminum particles circulating in the engine. ($200-300) They should be fine though, and I'm planning to ask 750 for those when I get around to removing them.

There was also a 3R set of heads that came out on GTS's.

let me know when you get them off. I'd like to see the condition of them. Mine are pretty corroded and I had them machined but they were still ugly. Yours might make nice spares that I could have ported and polished maybe with hotter cams too.

My 2R's are off an 89. I think the 2R's came mid year 89 if I remember right.

Jeff,

My son pulled the 2R heads off the TBF engine yesterday. The surfaces have lots of gasket material on them, but look pretty good as far as corrosion goes. I'll do some clean up and post some pics, maybe in a separate thread.

I have a deal pending on the 1R heads, but the buyer is having them checked out by an expert, so it will take a while to finalize.

I don't think they would match up to the S3 intake, now if you wanted to put an S4 intake on an S3, I have a S4 intake for sale as well :-). I think it's been done before, but the flappy control may be an issue.
