A light for working or under the car. I have bought the 125.00 headlamp that eats batteries, the corded fluorescent style that spin on its hook and always seems to glare at my face. I thought there might be a 21st century light that is nothing less than awesome.

Griots has a nice LED cordless light (it's $89 though)...http://www.griotsgarage.com/product/...ortby=ourPicks Harbor Freight has one that is similar and it's only $20. Probably going to pick one up soon... I've also picked up those tiny LED light that harbor freight has on sale for like $3. Has a magnet to stick to metal and is very bright.

I bet it is worth every penny. I like the magnet base and no cord. Is there any steel up in the engine area to use the magnet
Might need 2 of them to get in 7 hours of work.

Try the hood shocks...one from each side ..They are super bright (the small ones).. I try to pick up a couple each time I go and toss them in the cars, backpacks..wherever.. nice in a pinch for sure.

The Snap-On guy came into the shop that I work on my cars at with a handheld, rechargeable work light. Looked much like a corded single miniature fluorescent light.
As he walks towards the forklift he takes the light and smashes it full force 7 or 8 times against the counterweight. I thought he was going nuts and expected the thing to shatter in 1,000 pieces. Never seen the guy so violent before :P He turns on the light and handed it over. Worked flawless, and aside from a few nicks in the transparent part of the light no damage. The light is fantastic, bright, doesn't put out a lot of glare and lasts very long on a charge. Actually never was able to run it down on one job.
And yes, it's still working, even though it is his "forklift smashing demo" that he sold for almost half price. The thing is crazy expensive regularly though - I seem to recall around $170. Guess it's the Snap-On tax. But still, a pretty good light if you can get it at a decent price. I don't think the brand is actually Snap-On but one of the brands they distribute. I can check if there is a name/model on it when I am at the shop the next time.

Bouncelite... no joke. That's what it's called. This thing is insane, one mechanic at the dealership has one and he beats the **** out of it. He once swung it around like a jump rope and slammed it down on the floor, indestructible.

Seriously, this thing won't break at all.

http://www.maxxeon.com/led_professio...star_2000.html Thanks for the suggestions everyone. In looking closer at Griots light I was able to source a similar unit.

Interesting discussion ... I'd swear that underneath my car in the garage must be the darkest place on earth.
I've always wanted one that would lie flat on the ground and shine upward when working under the car. And have a simple charger to drop it in so always ready to go without a cord. Is that so much to ask?
Years ago I had a very cool 'snake' flashlight with a flex body about 20 inches long. You could bend the body to make it stand up and aim in the exact direction you wanted. Something like that with LEDs and recharging would be nice!

I have been on a continual hunt for "the right" shop light also. I have been through four in the past 18 months, both corded and cordless. I finally found one that I am "satisfied" with--it's still not exactly what I want, but close. It's called the Nano Lamp. It is only 9.5 inches long, including the hook. It is only .75 inches wide--small enough to get up into tight places in the engine bay easily. It has dual plugs for 12 volt or wall plug. If it was cordless with a long lasting battery it would be perfect. The URL: www.nanolampusa.com.

Good luck with your hunt.
