Default Heat in trans tunnel, under shifter

Maybe it's been this way forever and I didn't notice it, but I touched the ashtray yesterday after an hour of driving and it actually burned my fingers, that thing was HOT.

I pulled the ashtray out and the heat that came out from under there was shocking. I've noticed my Nakamichi radio has cut out a couple of times, didn't give it much thought but now I'm wondering if it's overheating.

Where is all this heat coming from? Is this normal? Can I do anything about it?

I know the cats are under there, but I thought that the high flow cats actually had more room around them for airflow. I dunno, just seems wrong.

Thanks as always

the heat is coming down the tunnel and being sucked outthe shifter opening when a window or the roof is opened,
to repair you need to check if the MMs are worn thus dropping the engine and foam pad down,
or the foam had deteriorated and isnt blocking off the heat

You are probably missing the foam sealing block around the shifter that stops the heat from just convecting straight up...

Its always going the be hot there - especially stopped at hot idle.

With the X-pipe/cats you shouldn't have anywhere near the heat up there that the factory cats produce. If your shifter is not hot, or the area around the shifter, then something else is going on there Jay.

I used to have that problem with my '71 Jag, i bypassed the heater core to realize my problem was HVAC ducting related and not a shifter sealing issue.
I know they are very different beasts but it could be heater related.

As Stan said - it's usually collapsed motor mounts. Been there done that with a couple of 928's!!

Either engine or transmission mount sag leaves a gap around the foam block that normally insulates the tunnel. The block pretty much sits on the torque tube at the shifter area. Air is drawn through that gap by low pressure in the car as Stan points out, when a window or the sunroof is open and you are moving. The heat comes from the exhaust and cats, even with the heat shields in place. Warm air is all that's down there, drawn around the shields.

So check motor mounts and transmission mounts to make sure they haven't drooped.

Yes, makes the most sense to start there.

OK thanks, the MMs are flat for sure, on the list for this Spring.

I was just surprised how hot it was, the metal ashtray was too hot to touch. Rarely open the ashtray door but I was trying to plug in a phone charger.

if you dont want the heat to come into the cabin,
put the windows up and close the roof then turn on the fan,
this will pressurize the cabin and keep the heat out

Or replace the motor mounts.

Well closing the windows and running the fan didn't do anything different, so motor mounts it shall be

you can possibly fix the seat/mirror memory by reflowing the solder joints in the board,
IIRC its bolted to the bottom of the PS seat
