New belt is only about $35, just slap one on.

Things that stand out to me on this belt.

1) More than a foot of scrapped teeth on both sides of the big scrape.
2) Crank gear the only thing I can imagine still spinning and grinding off the big scrape.
3) What broke the belt, assuming it broke after the teeth scrape?
3a) belt stretched enough to wrap on the crank and boom, breaks belt.

Original belt
Cam lock of some sort (multiple reasons: lack of oil, sucked valve, etc.)
Poor regular maintenance

danglerb, you forgot the "3000" Loved that show. Have the full dvd set.

I guess this is from a 5 speed car so the engine kept turning before the driver de-clutched ?

Would it be de-clutch or clutch? Gonna have to ponder on that one for a while......

Perhaps the belt was too tight due to the tensioner not working properly and then some time later the water pump seized allowing the belt to slip shearing the teeth off. The belt does look awfully old and tired. Is that the original belt?

Sorry guys, just finished the Saturday chauffeuring gig.

Just to complete the scenario, 95 Automatic, no clutching or declutching involved. Belt didn't break, Greg cut it to remove it.

Waterpump ok, cams not seized, spiders not broken.

I'm not sure why the 'every third missing tooth' pattern is there on the other parts of the belt. Didn't see the cam gear wear, as the engine's already apart.

Original 18 year old belt. One day the car wouldn't start. Owner kept hitting the key, until it wouldn't turn over anymore. Perhaps he shoulda stopped a bit sooner:
