Default 1987 928 downshifts out of 4th

Hello,
Wondering if anyone is familar with 1987 928 auto trans that down shifts out of 4th gear to third and will not shift up till car is turned off and restarted . Guy selling it says its beacause theres a vacuum leak or vacuum line problem going to trans. Any help thinking of buying it and its far away .

If It just a weee bit low on fluid...it can do odd things. Thats what I would check first.

Could be a vacuum issue as well. You can check to see it the line is holding vacuum.

In my experience, disconnected vacuum line makes all the upshifts very late and very firm.

Once the transmission is actually in 4th gear, unless you increase the load (throttle pressure) it should not downshift into 3rd gear.

And the fact that you need to shut the car off and "start over" seems strange.

I'm guessing a problem inside the valve body.

If this is the only problem with an 1987 928, it would be a great car to buy!

I tell everyone the same thing....if you choose carefully and get really lucky....plan on spending 5K-10K getting one of these 20 plus year old cars "up" to completely functional mechanical status....regardless of the year or mileage. If you get "unlucky" (or choose poorly) it can cost way more.

An '87 928 didn't have a sticker price of 80K because the pieces required to build it were cheap and Porsche was making an extraordinary profit! And while Porsche still has some parts for these vehicles, these parts are priced in "today's" dollars. I'm not sure what 80K would be, in "today's" dollars, but I'm guessing it would be about the price of a new Panamera....

Dave, congrats:-) I was follwing that car too. I think you got a good one. My 88 had a similiar issue right after it arrived. Was showing the wife how good a deal I got, then it downshifted and would not upshift. The next day I changed the fluid, including the torque converter. Changed the filter, filled her up usung the best Dextron 4, and prayed. The prayer is probably what worked. I never had another issue.

Keep us posted,
Frank

Dave, be sure to post some more pictures after she arrives. Also, if they haven't been replaced, replace those fuel lines ASAP. That is why I am still morurnig my 88. She burned 5 minutes after I got her running perfectlly. Mine had been stumbling as she accelerated. Turned out to be the regulator vacuume modules. All of them were bad.

I am a little jealous but hope she turns out to be everything you want,
Cheers,
Frank
