Default fuel cap and bumper shock?'s

In the pic you can see how the fule cap sticks out farther than would be desired causing the door to not shut tightly. I canot find anything bent/damaged/or otherwise causing this. Is there a way to tuck this inside more? shorter cap? I ahve searched and found others that have had the same problem but didn't find any fixes.
Does anyone have the dimensions for checking bumper shocks to see if they are compressed or not? the rear bumper on my 78 has a slight "dent" in it,wondering if the bumpers have been pushed in a little. Thanks,Shane

Why do you have a different gas cap then all other 928's? It should be red plastic. In my case, the red plastic cap did the same thing. I found another one at a junk yard and it sits lower and solved the problem with the fuel door. They appear exactly the same, but I guess there is a difference somehow.

there are 2 different caps pone for the long key with alarm and one for the short key no alarm
The inside of the cap is correspondingly longer or shorter.
Post pictures of the rear bumper shocks that might be able to offer some advice on if they have been used

How difficult is it to remove the front bumper?

here is the rear bumper shock. Sweet- My 78 is an early production and had a stainless cap. Looks like I'll be looking for a red cap.

Those shocks look to be good. I got the same measurement on the replacements I have on the shelf for mine that came from 928 International. That is assuming mine are good, but I trust the guys at 928 Intl.

the shocks look good,
for the wave in the rear PU cover,
maybe the lower metal channel that runs along the bottom of the PU cover has fallen off,
or the bumperetts were tightened with the cover not fully relaxed

I'm not sure why the metal cap wouldn't fit, it could be your gas tank is not sitting correctly. Fwiw, I think there might be some guys here restoring early 928's that would want to buy that metal cap from you. Warning, the red plastic caps are a little pricey. I got mine for 15 at a junk yard but they go for 150 new and 75 used. Considering the rarity of the metal cap you have, I bet it might be worth double the red ones.

Sweet- you may be right, I think once it comes back from paint and I have to drop the tank to clean and replace fule lines i'll see if I can find an extra 3/8" to slide the tank over. I do like the cap, matches the rest of the stainless.

its quite possible the tank may not be sitting in its correct spot,
remove the cap do you see the bolt that anchors the top of the tank?

You should be able to adjust that out. I'm assuming that's the original "early style" tank.

Check to see if the driver side cradle bolt is loose or missing. You can use a spacer to "tilt" the tank passenger side down...I would keep the SS cap as they are rare...and cool.

I dont think this tank has the top bolt that anchors it down. All straps and bolts are on and tight,If i can shim the tank down it should take care of it then.

Do you have the metal strap that wraps around the "filler snout" installed?

I agree with Dean. The SST gas caps are cool, esp. when polished.
