VW has a nice replacement that fits well (and works better. Just need to make a "harness" but that's easy.

I think Alan has a writeup.

Here's one. I think you can find them in black and grey as well.

Edit: Actually you want one from a MK5 or maybe a MK6. The one I link above is from a MK4. I think Jetta or Golf will both work. Not sure about Passat.

Ok... this is it for sure. Same as I have in my car. Nice positive detents when selecting on/off/door.

Roger sells them in a couple different colors with the pigtails too so they are plug and play. Much nicer than stock. Been replacing them as they die in my car.

Yes - I heartily recommend these - I have them all round - the stock ones are very cheesy parts - that are also used in (ancient) VW's - made by Hella though.

Functionally these more stable (better connection method), available is color Beige/Gray/Black (at least), Paintable, Better switching orientation, less likely to get screwed up wire connections when removed/replaced.

Another major advantage is that the fixture had an approx 4-5mm overhang past the fixture hole - this serves to cover up that gap where the trim is pulling away from the opening (most all do this eventually...).

The direction of the lens switch is longitudinal - to me this just works much better. You can use these in the doors also - though the 928 stock units there are usually OK - and a little less likely to be switched accidentally by your foot.

Andrew - That one is not switched and is too small. The other one you posted is the correct one as you noted... For new Roger is the best source incl the pigtails.

Couple of notes - these take slightly shorter festoon bulbs than the stock Porsche/Hella units (new come with bulbs), I simply modified mine to use the stock bulbs (I already had LED's all round) - pretty easy (fold the terminals). You will likely have to modify the pigtail plug for the rear most (low down) hatch light location - At least I did - insufficent clearance at one end.
