I just received a new Bosch fuel from Amazon. Fantastic price. It was $133 plus I had a gift card, cost me $90.
Anyway, it arrived today. I took it out of the box and the is a little rattle noise coming from the intake end of the pump. I mean, if I gently shake it, I get a little sound that reminds of the BB's rolling around in my old Daisy air pistol, sounds like it is right where the gas would enter the pump.
Is that normal? I just don't want to go through the hassle of installing it, if I know there is a problem.
I'll take your answers off the air.

Might just be a check valve. Why would you cheap out on one of the most important things that make our cars run?

does it look like the pump was dropped?
the rare earth magnets can be damaged if the pump outer body is smacked or dropped.
Otherwise the sound your hearing is most probably the rollers inside the pump, a normal condition

Stan, thanks. No the pump looks unharmed. No dents or scratches, box looks good as well.
The pump does have some sharpie looking marks by the inlet and near the opposite edge of the "can"...

Where was it made - a lot of cheap Bosch knock off's out there.
If it was made in Germany or Spain you got a good deal.

Does it have the "Do It Yourself" manual transmission, or the superior "Fully Equipped by Porsche" Automatic Transmission?

+1 on Stan's comments.
The pump is a direct displacement pump with steel rollers contained within the rotor following an elliptical profile to get the displacement of the fuel at the outlet.
When you first shook the pump, the rollers would have moved between the rotor and the stator as they are contained in slots cut in the rotor and also there was not liquid (lubricant) within the pump.
If it is an original Bosch manufacture then fit it and it should be OK when fuel is being pumped.
When the pump is in service and the pump unit gets hot with hot fuel they can also tend to be noisy as the viscosity of the fuel is reduced and the rollers tend to rattle around a little.

I thought if a Bosch fuel pump says Made in Germany, it's the cheap Chinese one... they should say Made in Czech Republic to be the authentic Bosch pumps. At least that's the way it is with 044 pumps.
