Default Masking Tape Removal

So, I did something particularly dumb, even for me.
In the fall, I was trying to eliminate a very annoying whistle that eminates from my passenger door at highway speeds.
My plan was to tape different parts of the door off, so I could find out where the air was sneaking in from. I think it would have worked, but after I put some tape on, the car conked out on me. It still does not start.
Since winter was approaching, I just put the car in the garage and figured that I had months to get it sorted before I would really be driving it again.
The other day I walked by the car and saw that I had never taken the tape off of the car. It is now not peeling off as easily as I would like it.
So, would Goo Gone be bad for the paint? Any recommendations on a product that will help remove the tape but not the paint?
Thanks to all,

Lacquer thinner..

Sun light and moisture will combine to bake the tape onto the car. The glue from the tape practically separates, thus making it a big PITA to get off. I wish I had a nickel for every time this has happened to me.

I keep a jar of natural peanut butter at home.

The oil eats off lots of stuff round the house when you have kids.

No lacquer thinner unless you want to repaint. Get a shark steamer, and hold it on there for a few seconds. You can peel whats left of the tape and goo right off without hurting the paint.

Lacquer thinner might take the paint off a 912, but it won't hurt the paint on your 928.

I'd go with the steam first.
Whatever tape was on my car at one time, left the glue actually in the paint, and it's not coming off/out.......
And I've tried pretty much everything I can think of, so get it off there ASAP.

Bob, I have heard the WD40 will remove masking tape or at least the adhesive/residue from it.

As to the whistle noise you were/are chasing, I think I know what it is. As you probably know, the 928s before the GTS all have a significant gap under the windshield trim on each side. The GTS cars all have the gap filled with a rubber insert. I think the gap was originally intended as a part of the water drainage system wherein the water runs over to the side of the windshield, into the gap, up the gap to a little opening under the trim where it transitions into the rain gutter that is kind of hidden under the aluminum trim strip that runs along the roof just above the doors.

I think that what the factory found with this system is that the wind noise created with air going through the little opening at the top corner of the windshield was annoying. So, what they did was stuff a short piece of weather stripping up into the corner of the windshield in the gap in order to close the small opening. Most of the 928s that I installed the my gap fillers in at OCIC and later other places have had a short piece of weather stripping stuffed in there, so I am pretty sure it was done at the factory.

Check that area of your 82 and I think you will find the opening at the top of the Gap under the WS trim is no longer closed. Then you can check the thread on this forum about the Gap fillers that I made to both close this opening and fill the gap along each side of the Windshield. Or you can find some kind of weather strip material and stuff it in there and close it up again.

Go to an auto body paint supply store. They should have a solvent that will get the tape off without damage.

Isopropyl alcohol will remove the tape residue and not hurt the paint. The only tape residue it will not remove is clear/shipping tape, but that's because the clear plastic shields the gum from the alcohol.'

PB Blaster works well also (noted above by Stan), but I just never liked the residue left by PB Blaster on my paint.

Like I said, give yours a wipe down and report back. Then head on back to Bizzaro world for a repaint.

WD-40 on a shop rag will do the trick without screwing up the paint.

Randy, I've got a Spraybake full downdraft paint booth sitting next to my shop. Just need to get the wiring in for it to make it usable. Hopefully, sometime soon.

For now, though, the paint booth at the Ford dealer that I use everyday should suffice in case I happen to wipe the paint off any of my cars. I use lacquer thinner everyday. Save for one time that I spilled it onto an uncured paint surface, I have never repainted a car for damage I caused from lacquer thinner. Just how do you think I prepare the surface, immediately before I paint it, if the car has had tire dressing slung all over it? You guessed it. Lacquer thinner.

The paint on your 928 is top notch stuff. It will repel almost anything short of a fire.

Careful There are at least two types of "Goof Off", the Industrial strength and the non toxic version. T
