I'm seriously hoping this thing checks out---this is one bad-*** 928.
First thing after making sure all systems are go---PorKen S300 and suggested mods. Serious, raucous V8 power on Irving Park to work in the mornings

I can say that one of the first things I'd do aside from making sure mechanics are in order (brakes, timing belt, water pump, etc.) is change out that awful head unit and switch it back to a Blaupunkt Monterey... Then shift ****, steering wheel, put black mats back in... and see what I could do about those faded rear seat backs.
Mechanical deficencies are my pet peeve, but the visual stuff is equally as irritating.
*rampant obsessive-compulsive tendencies already kicking in*

It's a little tired. I've thought pretty hard about this but it too is a pass, just like the one I had checked out in Tampa.
The good...from what Drew said, it's a strong runner and drives out pretty nice.
The bad...needs essentially an entire interior carpet set and a couple trim pieces. The dash is pretty cracked up. It smells moldy and someone did a poor job of replacing a few carpets. The paint also needs attention...the car needs paint.
Also, the engine bay is pretty nasty dusty dirty.
The owner spent a lot on mechanical repairs, did none of the work himself, no real hack jobs it sounds like but appearance wise it's really really poor. No deal to be had here, the owner really is not that aggressive.
Anyways, it's a pass---despite it's kick *** option list and the fact it's an 86, it's just not the right one. I'm still confident i can find what I want.

Just a tip, most any car you look at except for the few like the 6,000 mile philly 86 or the 316 mile GT or the GTS garage queens are going to need new carpet, some leather repair, and an engine detailing. Most paint jobs could also use a pro detail with polishing and compounds. That's just the way it is.
My engine looked lousy when I got it, the leather needs help here and there and though the carpet is nice I want a different color. If it runs well and not a basket case then you might think twice because very seldom is one for sale that is perfect, and if it is the price will be high.

Also, if Silver is your requisite, be prepared for either tired paint, a Maaco respray, or a Pro respray (if your lucky). Short of it is Silver just doesn't hold up well to age.
And if original Silver is also requisite, them be prepared to look at only low mileage "garage stored" examples.
EDIT: My anecdotal experience with Silver 928s has been w/respect to the OBs. Had exposure to many over the past couple years.

Thanks, guys. I really appreciate the help.
Not that I'm getting discouraged, but I really need to do some soul searching on what I really want to do. I appreciate the help and comments guys. You all have been extremely helpful.

Maybe you're going to have to compromise on one or two of your requirements. I know a 5 speed and S model is your top requirements so don't compromise on those. But, maybe you'll have to settle for a different exterior or interior color. Or keep looking. You haven't really been seriously looking for that long. Don't be discouraged.

My sense is a decent acquisition at approx $3.5 to $4K. But will be a project.
Mechanically operational (probably not all that well maintained), but a mess from a cosmetic perspective.
It takes a lot of work to get moldy smells out. Really pisses off the wife, too, when I bring one home that stinks. Probably one reason the daughter won't drive it.
