Default Bowden cable refresh

I’m trying to find something to replace the covering that is falling off either end of my Bowden cable. I’ve been looking into high rate heat shrink tubing and haven’t found anything quite right yet. I need something that is at least 1.27” before heating and at most .21” after. I found some stuff at tpcwire.com that is close but it’s unclear what lengths it comes in. I’ll need about a 4’ piece for the transmission side of the cable. Anyone tried this before?

Thanks,

-Ethan

if you are referring to the cables associated with the throttle linkage, I found a way to fabricate new covers: I took a mold of an old cap and re-cast a full set with dental silicone. Fitting them works by cutting them open and sliding them over the wire. After that the cut ends are glued with super glue and for added stability I attached a circular clip.
The one in the pic are holding up well since 2004. There may be differently colored silicones, too.

Edit: you should be able to use any other (cheaper) silicone as well!

I've use some 4:1 heat shrink on the forward section of the cable. It's better than it was and will be moisture resistant now. I'm planning to use liquid tape on the rear section. The 6:1 heat shrink just didn't work for this application.

Kurt, you could sell those if you made a huge batch of them. I'd pay a couple bucks each for them.

How would you install those cones without cutting the end off the cable? Never mind I get now!

I can't find the mold anymore..
Sooner or later the ones I have now will fall apart and I'll have to make a new mold. Anyway, I guess shipping from Europe would cost more than what the parts would be worth.

It's so sweet how eventually, the 928 community will figure out how to make almost every 928 part themselves as they get more expensive/NLA.

That's one of the most awesome benefits of being a part of this community.

By the way, I am a member and president of a local makerspace that we started about a year ago and have access to some pretty helpful equipment for making little bits and pieces like that, and have a few things in mind already.
Laser cutter and a small 3D printer plus regular shop tools are already in place, two more Replicator 2 3D printers are on the way right now, and shopbot, cnc lathe and cnc mill are following soon!

I just happened to find the mold again for my home made caps (see pic in Post #4). The mold might need some freshening up but I think I could get it to work again. Is there still any interest in these pieces and what color would be desirable?
If I remember right, the original caps were whitish and semi-translucent.
I haven't looked into this but I guess silicone could be obtained in the most common RAL colors.

Kurt,
Definitely interested in a couple of sets. White or dirty/translucent (Vaseline) colored would work.

EDIT: need 13 for ((2) 5 SPEEDS & 1 AUTO)

Kurt,

Definitely interested in a set.
Black or semi translucent would be perfect.

Edit: 10x for me please.
